[NOT using the Problem Based Learning model]

Teacher: Mr. Anderson School: Hermitage High School

Grade Level: 9-12

List specific content and technology SOLs which will be taught during this lesson:

Content Strand: Polygons and Circles SOL#: Geometry G.10

Lesson Overview:

Students will review the formulas for area and circumference of a circle and apply them in determining the area of a sector and arc length of a circle.

Objectives and Goals:

1. The student will use the formulas for area, circumference, sector and arc length to solve problems.

Approximate Time Required to Complete the Lesson: 90 minutes

Tools Needed:

·  1-to-1 laptop

·  Internet Access

·  Software: The Geometer’s Sketchpad, Calculator, Windows Media Player

Tasks/Activities:

Day 1:

  1. Warm-Up: Given the formulas: , the student will solve for C (circumference) and A (area) for the following values of r: 2, 3, 4, 5
  2. The teacher reviews the warm-up activity.

The following uses the IGO web page (HCPS Geometry Web resources): http://teachers.henrico.k12.va.us/math/igo/08Circles/8_2.html

  1. The teacher presents the lesson using the Powerpoint and Sketchpad File.
  2. Guided Practice: Students use the “Classwork” file for in class practice.
  3. The teacher reviews the classwork problems.
  4. Students do the “Self Check” quiz
  5. The teacher reviews the “Self Check” quiz
  6. Assignment: Students do all problems from the “Homework” file. If needed, the student may view the video tutorial for this lesson: http://teachers.henrico.k12.va.us/hermitage/anderson_p/VideoLecture/WMVideos/Lesson8-2.wmv

Day 2:

  1. Warm-Up: The teacher puts similar problems to the quiz on the board. The teacher checks the homework assignment with limited individual assistance.
  2. The teacher reviews the Warm-Up problems.
  3. The teacher reviews the homework assignment.
  4. Assessment is administered.

Assessment:

·  Traditional paper assessment

·  5 questions

·  Each question: 10 points for an appropriate formula, 10 points for a correct answer.
