COMMENT

This shows how much he is unable to communicate with his mother. He knows that she will not listen to him so he no longer bothers trying to tell her how he feels. This forces him to keep his suffering inside.

WRITING ACTIVITY

Imagine that you are Kingshaw at the end of chapter fifteen. Write a diary entry where you express your feelings about Hooper, Mr Hooper and your mother. Talk about your fears about going to Hooper’s school. You could also refer to Fielding.

This is an empathic task so make sure you do the following:

-  refer to key events in the novel

-  adopt an appropriate voice (Kingshaw is eleven years old)

-  use emotions and feelings as it is a diary entry
