MCQB COACH & TEAM ELIGIBILITY RULES

______Native and heritage language learners are not eligible to compete. For MCQB purposes, a “heritage language learner” is defined as “someone who is from a home where Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese) is spoken by any member of the household, whether or not the student is spoken to directly. Native and heritage students are encouraged to serve as non‐competition volunteers at the MCQB.

_____ Students who have spent a combined total of more than 30 days in a Chinese speaking country are not eligible to compete in the MCQB.

_____ Students in Chinese immersion programs—those who have more than ten hours of Chinese classroom instruction per week (including weekend classes)—are not eligible to compete in the MCQB.

MCQB TEAM REGISTRATION

_____ All coaches will be guaranteed the right to bring up to four teams per division. Please

Contact the staff at the Confucius Institute at Wayne State University, should you wish to bring additional teams.

______A fourth student may attend as an alternate for one designated team only. Alternates may not switch teams.

______An alternate may replace another contestant at the beginning of a competition, but not in the middle of a competition.

______In the event that a student from one team does not show up on the day of the Quiz Bowl, an alternate player from another team who is registered for the same division and from the same school may take the place of the absent player. Any such substitution, however, must be declared during registration and prior to competitions. No further substitutions will then be allowed.

______Alternates may not substitute for more than one team.
