Learning aims covered / Learning aim A: Explore the structure and organisation of retail business
Scenario / You are working on behalf of the British Retail Consortium to provide information for an article for a local newspaper on raising the awareness of retail businesses in the area. To do this, you will need to research retail businesses in the local area, looking at sizes and sub-sectors. Your article must contain examples of real businesses.
Task 1 / Structure and Ownership of Retail Business
The British Retail Consortium has asked you to write your article about how two different retail businesses operating in different sub-sectors measure their performance. This should cover how their ownership affects their performance indicators and why the businesses have chosen their respective aims and objectives.
Select two retail businesses operating in different sub-sectors (for example, an electrical/electronic goods chain and an independent baker). For each business describe the following and any factors which have influenced them:
· sub-sector
· channels (including non-outlet retailing, e.g. online, telephone selling, etc.)
· format
· size
· location
· ownership.
Expand this to assess two different types of ownership (e.g. public limited companies, partnerships, etc.). Prepare a handout which examines benefits and drawbacks of the type of ownership for the chosen businesses.
Research and identify two job roles at one of your chosen businesses and:
· describe the functions of each job role
· the progression routes of each role
· explain the role of two businesses that support retail business such as transport or accountancy, identifying the importance of these for the effective operation of the retail business.
Finally, identify and summarise the aims and objectives of your two selected retail businesses. To do this you should:
· describe the aims and objectives of the two retail businesses
· explain how and why the two retail businesses use these aims and objectives
· explain how these businesses use SMART targets
· evaluate how each business uses key performance indicators, such as sales, customer satisfaction, complaints and how this supports the business in measuring its performance.
