Unit number and title / Unit 9 – Computer Networks
Start date / 07/12/2012
Deadline / 11/01/ 2013
Assessor name / Ken Wake
Assignment title / Assignment 2 – Computer Network Services & Design
The purpose of this assignment is to:
To show an understanding of the different types of services provided by a computer network
To use the knowledge gained to be able to re-design a network to specific requirements
Scenario
Screw-Up Fixings are a medium-sized organisation. They manufacture and distribute a wide range of screws, bolts and other fastenings to the building and DIY industries. They have grown considerably over the last ten or so years, but in recent times they have seen very little growth, and some of their competition have done considerably better than them during the preceding year. Indeed, Screw-Up Fixings are acutely aware that one of their major clients has started to order products from a competitor. They understand that they need to move quickly to try to win the business back, and more importantly, prevent the loss of any further business to their competition.
The board of directors believe that the recent downturn in business is due to the company being slow to adopt new technologies, and, as none of the board has a technical background, you have been assigned the task of advising the board on the best ways of using technology to make their business more effective.
You are required to use a word processing and other appropriate presentation packages to demonstrate your network knowledge to the board of directors. This will increase your reputation and confidence amongst all the staff at Screw- Up Fixings
Task 1 (P5 / D2)
Explain the services that are provided by networks and how they can be of benefit to Screw-Up.
Directory services
Telecommunication services
File services
Application services (P5)
Evaluate the value of typical services available from a network operating system directory service only.
Provide a more detailed account of the usefulness of Directory services available:
1.  Domain Control (Managing Access)
2.  Account Management
3.  Authentication Management
(D2)
Task 2 (P6) – Security of a Network system
(You may refer to your submissions for Unit 7)
Create a PowerPoint presentation or report on network security covering the following:
·  Passwords / permissions / access control lists
·  Backup and restoring systems
·  Encryption
·  Physical security & Biometrics
·  Software protection
·  Malware / Viruses / Trojans / Worms / Spyware / Adware.
Task 3(M3) – (additional to task 2)
Explain the business risks of insecure networks and include recommendations to Screw-Up about how they can best protect themselves in the future.
Task 4(M2/D1) –
Screw-up Fixings have decided to expand their operations into two other regional areas but want their main systems and data management to remain centralised. As their current systems are outdated, they have decided to migrate their data and applications onto a new system at the same time as installing new networks into their new regional offices.
a)  Complete a Microsoft Visio design for their networks based on the specification provided as Appendix 1. At the end of this document. Use the knowledge you have gained to take account of the issues of redundancy and data management in your designs. (M2)
b)  Justify the design and choice of components of your network.
1/Explain your choice of components and connections for your new design
2/Explain how your choices meet the needs of the business
3/Explain how it should improve the performance and security of the Screw-Up network
(D1)
