Sixth Grade Reading Language Arts

Mrs. Milkowski

Welcome 6th grade WoodCreek Timber Wolves!

About Me

I graduated from the University of Houston with a Masters Degree in Reading Language Arts and have taught sixth grade Language Arts at West Memorial Jr. High and WoodCreek Jr. High. Before teaching, I have had plenty of opportunities to work with children of various ages. For instance, I have been a camp counselor, gymnastic coach, pre-school teacher, youth mentor, substitute teacher and parent classroom volunteer.

I have lived in Katy, Texas for almost 10 years. Besides Texas, I have called many places ‘home’ such as Pennsylvania, New Jersey, North Carolina, California and Brussels, Belgium.

I have two wonderful children: Stephen, who is a graduate student at UT Arlington, and Holly, who is a graduate student at the University of Houston. She is also getting married in October!!! I also have two very big, very slobbery, and very lovable English Mastiff dogs: Angus and Buster.

A few of my favorite things: reading and writing (!), yoga, walking my dogs, road trips, Dunkin Donut coffee and New Jersey diners.

Below, I have included some important information that will help your child have a successful start to junior high!

Grading

45% - major work such as tests, projects, book reports, and reading logs

40% - minor work such as quizzes and daily grades

15% - other work such as participation and completion activities

Textbooks and Supplies

You will be using a literature and language arts textbook in the classroom but the majority of our reading will come from class novels and independent reading selections. It is your responsibility to bring the following supplies daily to class:

Daily Planner

Reading/Language Arts Folder

Blue/Black Ink Pen

Grading Ink (such as red)

Highlighters

Colored Pencils

Independent Novel

Class Novel

We will read the following novels this year as a class:

The Cay by Theodore Taylor

Gathering Blue by Lois Lowry

Red Kayak by Priscilla Cummings

Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls

We will be using these novels during our Read Alouds and it will be beneficial to have your own copy to write in the margins, jot down questions in the book and re-read sections at home for better understanding.

You will also be required to bring to class every day an independent reading selection of their choosing for Reading/Writing Workshop.

Homework

You will be assigned 30 minutes of reading every night and submit a reading log on GoodReads.com. Most other reading and writing activities will be completed in class. We will also have a few projects throughout the year with plenty of time to complete them in class; however, it may be necessary for some of you to finalize these projects at home. It is your responsibility to make note of due dates, manage your time well and submit all work on time.

**20 points will be deducted for all late work.

The class webpage allows students and parents access to important classroom information, weekly updates, the calendar and resources: tmilkowski.pbworks.com

*Please note: I am not utilizing Teacher Web on WCJH’s campus website. However, I did post a link on the webpage to my Wiki.

Assignments, handouts and due dates will be posted on a regular basis on Edmodo.com. Students will be required periodically to access this site for assignments as well as submit work. The passcodes are as follows (I have also posted them to my Wiki)
