Ramingining

School and Community Profile

The Community

Ramingining is an idyllic, culturally rich Indigenous community, 552 kmeast ofDarwin, in the tropical forest on the edge of the Arafura Swamp. Many outstations are situated on the banks of lagoons and rivers teeming with wildlife.

The main languages are Djambarrpuyngu and Gupapuyngu, used by many residents as a first language. The traditional owners of the land where the community is located are the Yolngu clan.

The School

Full-time teachers: 23

Full-time assistant teachers: 10

Enrolments: 310

Average student attendance: 56%

School years: Preschool to senior years

Indigenous students: 100%

Ramingining School provides education from preschool to year 12. It also provides education services to three Homeland Learning Centres (HLCs). The HLCs are varying distances from the school and the students travel into Ramingining to access educational services.

Enrolment and attendance at Ramingining School is variable, with the highest attendance during the wet season and a lower attendance rate during the dry season when people are most mobile.

Ramingining has a signed Remote Learning Partnership Agreement in place and has also been identified as a site under the National Partnership Agreement on Remote Service Delivery, as well as a Territory Growth Town under the NT Government's A Working Future initiative.

Housing

Furnished one, two or three bedroom homes are provided to teachers and their families to lease at no cost. There is limited housing available in the community and you may be required to live in share houses with other teachers.

The NT Government’s Territory Housing is tenancy manager who coordinates repairs and maintenance. The Department of Education and Training provides funding to the school to furnish the houses.

Most houses are equipped with a chest freezer, washing machine, lounge suite, coffee table, book case, computer desk, oven and stove, microwave, fridge, dining room table and chairs, a queen bed in the master bedroom and single bed in other bedrooms, with a chest of draws and curtains in each bedroom.

Shopping and Supplies

The Alpa Store and Homelands Centre sell a selection of everyday items and hot takeaway food. There are many things you cannot buy in the community and teachers do their grocery shopping through a bush account at Coles or Woolworths, and have their supplies delivered weekly to Ramingining School by Perkins Shipping Barge.

The Ramingining Health Clinic is located in the centre of the community and provides primary health care services to the residents. It is a walk in service and is available after hours in emergencies only. All health emergencies are airlifted (via the NT Aerial Medical Service) to Gove District Public Hospital.
