MONROE’S PARENTAL INVOLVEMENT POLICY 2016-17

Policy Involvement

  • Monroe will convene an annual Title I meeting, at a convenient time to which all parents shall be invited and encouraged to attend.
  • Monroe will hold a flexible number of meetings at varying times. Meeting days and times will vary from mornings, to afternoons, to evenings so that a parent will not be “locked” out by exclusive Thursday night meetings. The school may, with Title I funds, pay reasonable a necessary expenses associated with parental involvement activities, including transportation and child care costs, to enable parents to participate in school-related meetings and training sessions.
  • Monroe will take the following actions to involve parents in the joint development and joint agreement of its School Parental Involvement Policy, the Parent-School Compact, and its Single Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA)in an organized, ongoing, and timely way under section 1118 (b) of the monthly, will permit input and participation in the development and revision of the plan.
  • Monroe will provide parents of participating children:
  • Timely information via the school web site, quarterly newsletter, and situation specific letters. Phone Master pre-recorded calls will be placed in order to inform parents of program times and locations.
  • A descriptions and explanation of the curriculum in use at the school, the forms of academic assessment used to measure student progress, and the proficiency levels students are expected to meet, through course syllabus sent home with students, student-led conferences and discussions through Advisory period about standardized test performance levels and student goals on Back to School nights.
  • If requested by parents of participating children, opportunities for regular meetings to formulate suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children, and respond to any such suggestions as soon as practicably possible, through our Parent (CEAC) and English Learner Advisory Committee (ELAC) parent advisory committee monthly meetings.
  • Monroe will submit to the district any written parent comments if the Single Plan for Student Achievement under section 1114(b) 2) is not satisfactory to parents of participating children.

Shared Responsibilities for High Academic Achievement

Monroe will jointly develop with parents the School-Student-Parent Compact that outlines how parents, the entire school staff, and students will share the responsibility for improved student academic achievement. Monroe’s parent compact states that:

  • Monroe is responsible for providing high quality curriculum and instruction.
  • Teachers will provide high-quality instruction in a supportive and effective learning environment that enables students meet the State’s student academic achievement standards.
  • It is the parent’s/guardian’s responsibility to provide a positive learning environment at home by providing a quiet place for studying.
  • It is the parent’s /guardian’s responsibility to make sure that their child attends schools every day, on time, and with homework completed. It is also their responsibility to monitor their child’s television viewing.
  • Academic success is the student’s responsibility. The compact outlines Monroe’s expected student learning results, which include: being a responsible adult, effective communicator, productive citizen, lifelong learner, collaborative worker, and problem solver.
  • Communication between teachers, parents, and students is highly important. Teachers and parents are expected to monitor student’s progress and communicate with each other regularly through notes, phone calls, and/or conferences. Students are expected to be effective communicators by regularly talking to their parents and teachers about their progress in school.
  • Monroe will hold parent-teacher conferences, at least annually, to discuss the parent compact.
  • Monroe will provide frequent reports to parents on their child’s progress.
  • Parents have the right to be involved in their child’s education. Parents can observe the activities of the classroom(s) in which their child is enrolled or will enrolled or will be enrolled, meet with their child’s teacher(s) and the principal and volunteer their time and resources for the improvement of school facilities and programs.

Building Capacity for Involvement

  • Monroe will provide assistance to parents of children served by the school in understanding topics such as the following:
  • California’s academic content standards
  • California’s student academic achievement standards
  • State and local academic assessments, including alternate assessments
  • Monroe will provide materials and training to help parents work with their children to improve their children’s academic achievement, such as literacy training, and using technology, as appropriate, to foster parental involvement by:
  • Read to Your Child training and books provided
  • ESL classes for parents and the community
  • Offering Parent Institute classes and engaging with other parents
  • Providing Internet access via the school district
  • Monroe will, with the assistance of our parents, educate our teachers, pupil services personnel, principals and other staff, in how to reach out to, communicate with, and work with parents as equal partners, in the value and utility of contributions of parents, and in how to implement and coordinate parents programs and build ties between parents and schools.
  • Monroe will, to the extent feasible and appropriate, coordinate and integrate parental involvement programs and activities, such as parent resource centers, that encourage and support parents in more fully participating in the education of their children by offering a staffed parent center and posting these programs and activities on the school’s master calendar, marquee, quarterly newsletter, and web site to permit advance planning.
  • Monroe will, to the extent feasible and appropriate, take the following actions to ensure that information related to the school and parent programs, meetings, and other activities, is provided/sent to the parents of participating children in an understandable and uniform format, including alternative formats upon request, to the extent practicable, in a language the parents can understand:
  • All correspondence is sent in English and Spanish
  • Our phone system offers assistance in Spanish
  • Translators, to a feasible extent, are available on campus upon request.
  • Concurrent translating headphones are available upon request.
  • Our monthly CEAC and ELAC meetings will be bilingual, Spanish and English, whenever possible.

Monroe will provide other reasonable support for parental involvement activities under section 1118 as parents may request.

Accessibility

  • Monroe will provide full opportunities for the participation of parents with limited English proficiency, parents with disabilities, and parents of migratory children.
  • Monroe will provide information and school reports in an understandable and uniform format and, to the extent practicable, will distribute this policy to parents in a language the parents can understand.
