A child prodigy who won many piano competitions in his native China, he was awarded a full scholarship in piano at the Julliard Prep School.A few months after Yang began his musical studies at Julliard, his father died in an auto accident. Yang and his mother decided to remain in America after this tragedy.

Later that year, Yang auditioned with renowned pianist Susan Starr of Philadelphia. In January of 2004, Yang and his mother moved to Philadelphia to study with Ms. Starr. He is currently a 10th grader at GAMP (Girard Academic Music Program) High School in Philadelphia. “His talent is enormous,” Ms. Starr has said of Yang. “Already he is playing at the college level, and his technique exceeds that of some of my most advanced doctoral students.”

In June of 2006, Yang began studying music theory with concert pianist Marja Kaisla, director of the Delaware Valley Conservatory of Music, and in June of 2007 he became the piano student of the celebrated Chinese pianist Mr. Cheng-Zong Yin.

Yang has given three piano recitals since moving to Philadelphia in January of 2004. Last spring he was invited to play in a Kimmel Center Children’s Concert featuring the world-famous Chinese pianist Lang Lang. Earlier last year he was a finalist in the Philadelphia Orchestra’s Greenfield Competition, and in March of 2006 he won the Lansdowne Symphony Orchestra’s Young Artists’ Competition.
