Responses will vary. Students should recognize that Travis thinks that Eckels deserves to die because Eckels's carelessness has changed history. Students may use the following details to explain why Travis believes that Eckels's careless mistake has changed history:

A. Eckels stepped off the path even though he was warned not to do so (lines 251-259);

B. when the travelers return, they find out that Eckels killed a butterfly when he stepped off the path (lines 387-391);

C. the travelers then learn that the country has a new president (lines 398-401).

Responses will vary. Students should explain that the story ends the way that it does because Eckels misjudges his own weaknesses and the risks of time travel. Students may use the following examples to show that Eckels believes himself to be stronger than he actually is:

A. he is insulted when the office worker tries to scare him into backing out of the trip (line 49);

B. he thinks that because he has succeeded in killing other big game that he can kill a dinosaur (lines 194-195);

C. when the group encounters Tyrannosaurus rex, Eckels is overcome by its size (lines 222-228), and he panics and walks off the path (line 257).

Students may use the following example to show that Eckels underestimates the risks of going back in time:

A. he does not take warnings seriously (lines 179-182, 205-206, and 222-230);

B. he refuses to believe that he could have caused any real damage to the world by stepping off the path (lines 348-354).
