Bake Sale

Each month there are two bake sales. This months bake sales are on April 12th hosted by Mme. Grabia’s grade 1/2 class, and April 26th hosted by Mme. Pederson’s grade 2 class.

Heads up! On May 17th, I will need 3 volunteers to help run our class bake sale. I will need parents to arrive around 9:15am and sell goods until 10:20am. If there are any left-over bake sale items I would then need volunteers to return at 12:00pm to help sell to a second round of students. For this to be a successful bake sale I will need each family to send in 1.5- 2 dozen items. Please try to keep the theme of healthy hearts in mind when making your items.

Microwave Lunches

As you know students are able to bring a microwave lunch on Tuesday’s. Please remember to put your child’s lunch in a container with their name and class clearly labeled on the container. Please DO NOT send lunch in saran wrap or in original plastic wrapping. Thank you for your help in ensuring our microwave lunch days go off smoothly.

Home Reading Reminders

I encourage everyone to be reading 10-15 minutes per night. If you forget to write the minutes in the agenda please feel free to send me an email Monday’s letting me know how many minutes your child read the previous week. I want as many students as possible to participate in this program. One sticker for each week can be earned if your child reads for at least one hour that week. In addition, your child can also earn a free pizza if they read for an hour each week of the month. These are prizes for students as incentives.

Scholastic Book Orders

Each month I send home a Scholastic book order. The book order catalogue will be sent home shortly and is due on April 12th, 2017. No late orders will be accepted.
If you wish to purchase books, please make a cheque (no cash please) payable to Scholastic Canada.

The following is an overview of the main areas we will focus on throughout April.

Language Arts

Earth Day

This month in Language Arts we will be focusing on the theme of Earth Day. Students will be writing an Earth Day promise as well as writing about different ways to save and preserve our earth. We will finish the unit off by reading “The Lorax” by Dr. Seuss.

When is Earth Day?

Earth Day is April 22nd every year, all around the world. Earth Day has grown so much that celebrations take place throughout the whole month of April, also known as Earth Month.

How many people celebrate Earth Day?

More than 6 million Canadians join 500 million people in over 180 countries in staging events and projects to address local environmental issues. Nearly every school child in Canada takes part in an Earth Day activity.

What is the history of Earth Day?

Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson and Harvard University student Dennis Hayes celebrated the first Earth Day in 1970.

Spelling

The students will continue working on Words Their Way, and complete a different sort each week. They will participate in stations including: meeting with the teacher, a writing sort, a blind sort, and a speed sort. Once a week, students will have a spelling test based on the rules of the sort. Please check to see when your child’s spelling test will be.

Math

We are working on our unit on adding and subtracting numbers to 100. Students are learning and using various strategies to add and subtract numbers to 100. The next unit we will be working on is the measurement unit. Throughout the rest of the school year we will continue working on our basic facts as well as 2 digit adding and subtracting. Keep up the great work!

Fast Facts

We have been practicing our basic facts throughout the school year in various ways. One of the ways we have been practicing is by using our fast facts page. This is an 11x17 inch piece of paper with addition basic facts on one side and subtraction facts on the other. Students are given 5 minutes per side (addition or subtraction) to complete all the facts they know off by heart (without using their number line or fingers). If they do not know the answer without using one of those strategies they are to leave it blank. All students started on form A as students are able to quickly answer all of the facts I move them onto the next form.

Science

This month in science we will be starting the unit Exploring Liquids.

In this unit students will:

●  Recognize and describe characteristics of liquids

●  Compare water with one or more other liquids

●  Compare the amount of liquid absorbed by different materials

●  Learn that water can be changed to other states

●  Understand that it is human's responsibility to maintain and clean our water supply

Social Studies

This month in social we will be continuing our trip to Iqaluit. Students will be learning about the land, water, climate, traditions and culture of Iqaluit. Once we are finished Iqaluit, we will be exploring the city of Saskatoon!
