V8 Gasoline Engines
  1. Scribe alignment marks on hood and remove hood from hinges.
  2. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  3. Drain cooling system, then remove the heater hoses and the radiator hoses from the engine.

CAUTION
When draining the coolant, keep in mind that cats and dogs are attracted by the ethylene glycol antifreeze, and are quite likely to drink any that is left in an uncovered container or in puddles on the ground. This will prove fatal in sufficient quantity. Always drain the coolant into a sealable container. Coolant should be reused unless it is contaminated or several years old.
  1. Remove the upper fan shroud and the fan assembly.
  2. If equipped with air conditioning and power steering, remove the compressor and the power steering pump from the engine, then position them aside.
  3. Disconnect the accelerator and the T.V. cables.
  4. Remove the transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped) from the radiator and remove the radiator.
  5. Disconnect and label the vacuum hoses and the CCC wiring harness connector(s) from the engine.
  6. If equipped, remove the AIR pipe from the converter.
  7. Remove the windshield washer bottle.
  8. Disconnect and mark the wiring harness and related engine wiring.
  9. Remove the distributor cap and the Cruise Control cable (if equipped).
  10. Disconnect the positive battery cable from the battery and, if equipped, the frame straps. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the air conditioning hose/alternator bracket.
  11. Raise and support the vehicle on jackstands.
  12. Remove the crossover pipe and the catalytic converter as an assembly.
  13. If equipped with an automatic transmission, remove the torque converter cover and the torque converter bolts.

Before removing the torque converter bolts, scribe a mark to ensure the relationship between the torque converter and the flex plate.

  1. Remove the engine-to-mount bolts.
  2. Disconnect the fuel line from the fuel pump.
  3. If equipped with an automatic transmission, disconnect the torque converter clutch wiring from the transmission. Disconnect the transmission oil cooler lines from the clip at the engine oil pan.
  4. Remove the engine-to-transmission bolts.
  5. Lower the vehicle and support the transmission.
  6. Secure a vertical lifting device to the engine and remove the engine from the vehicle. Pause several times while lifting the engine to make sure no components, wires or hoses are caught.

CAUTION
When removing the engine from the transmission, be careful that the torque converter does not pull out of the transmission.

To install:

  1. Secure a vertical lifting device to the engine and install the engine to the vehicle.
  2. Support the transmission.
  3. Install the engine-to-transmission bolts.
  4. If equipped with an automatic transmission, connect the torque converter clutch wiring to the transmission. Connect the transmission oil cooler lines to the clip at the engine oil pan.
  5. Connect the fuel line to the fuel pump.
  6. Install the engine-to-mount bolts.
  7. If equipped with an automatic transmission, install the torque converter bolts and the torque converter cover.
  8. Install the crossover pipe and the catalytic converter as an assembly.
  9. Lower the vehicle.
  10. Connect the positive battery cable to the battery and, if applicable, to the frame straps. Connect the negative battery cable to the air conditioning hose/alternator bracket.
  11. Install the distributor cap and, if equipped, the Cruise Control cable.
  12. Engage the wiring harness and related engine wiring connectors.
  13. Install the windshield washer bottle.
  14. If equipped, install the AIR pipe to the converter.
  15. Connect the vacuum hoses and the CCC wiring harness connector(s) to the engine.
  16. Install the transmission oil cooler lines (if equipped) to the radiator and install the radiator.
  17. Connect the accelerator and the T.V. cables.
  18. As applicable, reposition and secure the compressor and/or the power steering pump.
  19. Install the upper fan shroud and the fan assembly.
  20. Install the heater hoses and the radiator hoses to the engine, then fill the cooling system.
  21. Connect the negative battery cable.
  22. Install the hood.
