Course Description

Medical Terminology is a one-credit course that is designed for students to develop health care specific knowledge for a career in the medical field. The course uses an integrated approach for teaching the language of medicine to the health care student by incorporating medical terminology with anatomy and physiology and the disease process. This method has been proven to be a logical and effective method of learning the language of medicine.

Prerequisites: Must be in the 11th or 12th grade and have completed Foundations of Health Science.

Course Objectives:

Upon completion of the course the student will be able to:

·  Explain the techniques of medical word building using basic word elements

·  Categorize major suffixes in the following groups: surgical, diagnostic, symptomatic and related suffixes

·  Recognize and define suffixes that denote adjective noun, singular, and plural forms of medical words

·  Categorize major prefixes in the following groups: position, number , measurement, negation, direction and other prefixes

·  Identify and define anatomical, physiological and pathological terms relating to body systems

·  Combine forms of medical words denoting anatomical directions, regions of the body, anatomical structures, color and other combining forms relating to body structure

·  Correctly spell medical terms

·  Identify prefixes, suffixes and combining forms

·  Communicate the utilization and application of commonly used medical terms

o  Arrange word roots, prefixes, and suffixes to form medical terms.

o  Categorize word parts by body systems.

o  Interpret terms relating to all major body systems.

o  Correlate origin of terms to other languages.

o  Identify medical acronyms, homonyms and eponyms.

o  Recognize and define plural forms of medical terms.

o  Access resources to enhance understanding of medical terms.

o  Identify and use common medical abbreviations.

o  Relate medical terms to normal anatomy, growth and development, diagnostic procedures, pharmacology, surgery, mental health and medical specialties.

o  Compare the use of medical terms in the media and real-life situations.

o  Pronounce medical terms.

o  Demonstrate employability and social skills relevant to health careers.

o  Use medical terminology within a scope of practice in order to interpret, transcribe and communicate information, data and observations.

o  Recognize and define suffixes that denote noun, adjective, singular, and plural forms of medical words.

o  Categorize major prefixes in the following groups: position, number, measurement, negation, direction, and other prefixes.

o  Demonstrate the employability and social skills relevant to health careers.

o  Utilize activities of Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) as an integral component of course content, skills application, and leadership development.

o  Use information technology applications as appropriate to health care specialties.

o  Integrate literacy and numeracy concepts and processes across all curricular units

Textbook: Dean Vaughn, Diversified Health Occupations, Health Care Science Technology will be utilized as central textbook. Other textbooks and reference material will be utilized throughout the course.

Assessment Procedures - Students grades will be calculated from the number of points earned for each of the following activities. Most activities will be worth 100 points or converted to a percentage.

·  A = 90 – 100
