COLLEGE AND CAREER PREPARATION FOR

9th GRADE STUDENTS

FRESHMAN CALENDAR

ACADEMIC

·  Ensure that you are enrolled in your core courses: English, Math, Science, History, and Foreign language (depending upon diploma type you are pursuing).

·  Become familiar with high school graduation requirements. Know diploma types and know what “GPA” means

·  Maintain good grades-Freshman year DOES count!!!!

·  How are your study, test-taking and time management skills? What is your learning style? Speak with your school counselor.

·  If you plan to go to college, begin a list of colleges/universities that you have heard about, have an interest in and would like to explore (this list will likely change by the time you reach your senior year).

·  Work with your school counselor to plan a challenging schedule for your sophomore year. Explore taking more honors and an advanced placement course. Rigor does matter and makes a difference.

CAREER

·  Begin making a list of careers that have peaked your interest.

·  Begin making a list of your skills, activities and accomplishments.

·  Develop a resume. See your career specialist for help and more information.

·  Begin developing a portfolio of your awards, accomplishment and accolades.

·  Explore your interests and skills through informational interviews, job shadowing, volunteering, etc.

PERSONAL/ SOCIAL

·  Become involved with community service and volunteer activities during the school year if it works with your schedule, but definitely try to focus on these activities during the summer (ex. United Way, Adopt a Highway, Boys and Girls Club).

·  Get involved. Join a club or athletic team. Take on a leadership role.

·  Build positive relationships with your teachers, other adults and peers.
