Type of Activity: Lifting

Purpose- The purpose of this lifting skill is to teach students how baseball pitchers need to lift their legs and drive to develop speed.

Preparation Cues:

  1. First I will start the lesson off by introducing the correct pitching motion and why lifting your leg is so important in the game of baseball. After giving the class some background information on that subject I will then demonstrate to the class how to correctly lift your leg and how in certain situations a pitcher cannot lift their leg all the way up. After explaining this to the class I will separate them in groups of two and have them work together and have them show me the correct way to lift their legs.

Execution Cues:

  1. After explaining to the class the correct form on how to lift your leg during the pitching motion I will quickly put them in groups of two and watch ever group explain and have them show me the correct form.
  2. I want to first explain to the class the correct form of lifting your leg if you’re a pitcher. Many students in the class may have never played baseball before in their lives so I want to make a very clear explanation on what the correct form is and how high to lift your leg in certain situations. After explaining and demonstrating the correct forms, my goal is for the students to completely understand the correct form and how to execute the correct positioning. By putting students in groups of two, I feel, as this will help students communicate and work with one another if problems occur.

Follow-Through Cues:

  1. To ensure proper development I will cue students throughout the lesson to make sure they are properly raising their legs the correct way and raising their leg at the correct height. I will also cue students during the lesson to make sure they’re listening and paying attention, I will be asking them questions throughout the lesson. To ensure students accuracy I will be testing each group to see how high they are lifting their legs and if they are using the proper form. By doing this I will cue students and help them with the proper motion of lifting their legs. To ensure my students have precision of my skill I will cue them after my demonstration is over and while they are performing the skill. By cueing them before and during, this will help students get a better understanding before they begin the lesson and it will help them during just incase some students are having difficulty.

Summary Cues:

  1. When should a pitcher lift their leg lower?
  2. When a pitcher lifts their leg they are developing power and strength with their legs to deliver a pitch to their best potential. When a runner is on first base pitchers need to lift their leg lower so that runners have a more difficult time stealing second base. Standing on the mound is very important and the pitcher needs to be in a comfortable position in order to lift their leg and produce a good pitch.
