Key Areas in a Police Department
Report Writing Room
This is where officers or detectives prepare the samples collected from the crime scene by labeling and putting the sample into bags or boxes. From here the evidence technician receives and logs the sample into the system. This is where FrameWRX and knowing about packaging products bar coding etc. will come in handy.
Temporary Evidence Areas
If the technician is not there in person to receive the samples this is where DSM lockers are used. Some police departments have wooden or laminated lockers with pad locks and keys some have old school lockers, some pass thru, some not. Know your DSM solutions here and don’t forget to get a small refrigerator in here.
Evidence / Property Storage Room (considered long term storage)
Once the evidence is in here it may have to up to 75 years so it’s usually the largest room. Mobile is a great solution for here; there are usually piles of evidence all over the place. It is not always the same type or quantity of evidence stored and they need help here, cold storage in a DSM large fridge is a safer and better way instead of the residential ones normally used. Offer to help plan the layout of the room to get better use of the space.
Gun and Weapon Room (the seized ones)
All seized weapons are supposed to be stored separate from the rest of the evidence This is an area or a room, usually in the evidence room is where up to hundreds of guns both long and short are stored. Weapons racks could be used in here. Guns could be put into boxes and put on your shelves.
Narcotics Room
All narcotics are supposed to be stored separate from the rest of the evidence Depending on how much they have will determine the best solution for their needs. This room will normally be in the evidence room.
Large Evidence/Property Storage Rooms
This is where the big bulky stuff goes it won’t fit anywhere on a shelf. They all get in bikes, boxes, and big things. Work out a solution here and you will be a hero.
Area for Drying Wet Evidence
This is sometimes in or near the sally port area where it might be easier to unload some wet evidence from a vehicle without getting mess all over.
Some departments use a low quality fiberglass shower stall or screen cage like lockers for doing the drying. You have an all stainless steel DSM cabinet to do this job.
Sally Port
This is where the officers drive their cruiser into the police building with the bad guys and unload them from the back of the cruiser and transfer them to a holding cell. Wall mount gun lockers are used here on both sides of the secure wall for locking handguns away, prior to handling the prisoner.
Locker Rooms
All officers should have some sort of locker to store their personal stuff in when on duty and work stuff when off duty. Often civilians will also get lockers if there is enough room. PDLs with or without benches is the answer here. Duty bag lockers can help here if the duty bag cannot fit into their issued lockers.
Records Rooms
There has to be more than 1 place in a police department where records are stored, from tickets to juvenile records, personal files and crime cases. You have to ask about these areas and offer filing solutions.
Armory and Gun Storage
This room is for the storage of non standard guns and rifles that may be needed by the police occasionally or during a crises time, machine guns, gas guns, shotguns, m16s and sniper rifles are sometimes stored here. It will be under lock and key with someone in charge. UWR and also DSM 20 gun front door opening gun locker are solutions for this area, Depending on what they want.
