Materials: Dr. Cupp Readers & Journal Writers Part 2 p. 213-214, Reader #54 p. 1, and ThinkerBox Book Chapter 10 pages 37-45.

TLW read with fluency.

Procedure:
Students will read page 1. New sight words can be easily sounded out.

Section C-Ten Minute Phonics
1/3 of the group time
Materials: Reader #54 p. 6-7, Manual p.203, Toolbox Decks 33, 34, 35, and 36.
Objective: TLW sound out Diphthongs-ew-new, oo-moon, oo-book, au-August, and aw-saw.
Teacher’s Note: In Lessons 52-55, diphthongs are introduced. The reader contains many words for practice; however, there are no Card Decks. If students have trouble sounding out words when they need diphthongs in text, then make a Card Deck for diphthongs.
Procedure: The teacher introduces each of the five diphthongs in this lesson one at a time following the steps given in Reader53. (See page 211 of Manual.) The diphthong is written on the board or on an index card. The key word is given to help students remember the diphthong sound. Using page 6 in Reader 54, the students practice sounding out new words with the diphthongs.
p. 7- Review and practice- Students should practice sounding out words with either Toolbox Card Decks or pages 6 and 7 in the Reader.
Assessment- Page 6
The teacher will select four words from column one or two. Students will take turns sounding out words.

Independent Time for Reader #54
The teacher may select pages 8 and 9 of Reader 54. Suggested Writing Activity- Students should research the topic of rainbows and then draw a picture of a rainbow. Students will write a report telling everything they know about rainbows.

The teacher may select p. 12 and 13 of Reader 54.
Suggested Writing Topic-The illustrations on page 12 show Miss O looking at the rainbow. The text in the story said that Miss O could ‘hold the colors’ of the rainbow. Write a report explaining why Miss O could ‘hold the colors’ of the rainbow.
