Summer School SANTANDER 2010

MUSIC AS A PERVASIVE SOCIAL, SCIENTIFIC, HUMAN and ENVIRONMENTAL EXPERIENCE

The countless different perspectives from which music can be approached, both directly and indirectly, makes it a common framework for fruitful intercultural and interdisciplinary exchanges.

The school aims at widening the range of different viewpoints on Music of students, coming from different faculties and schools of arts, dealing with music-related topics (scientific, social, artistic, human, environmental etc.)

The program of the school will consist, as sketched below, in a series of lectures, presentations and demonstrations covering the broadest range of disciplines interacting with Music.

The lectures dealing with the humanistic, social, naturalistic and intercultural side of Music will focus on the peculiarities of the Mediterranean area and of Southern Italy.

Special sessions will be organized for discussions and presentations by the students of the school.

Official language of the school: English.

The topics of the lectures will include:

- The mathematical bases and the use of mathematical methods in music.

- The botanic peculiarities of the mediteranean area and south Italy, and their influence in the construction of traditional instruments.

- Music and spirituality in the Mediterranean area: the role of the ney flute in the sufi misticism and rituals.

- The approach of Cognitive Science to Music.

- Vincenzo Bellini in Catania: portraying the musical identity of a Mediterranean city.

- Music and Literature: "Cavalleria rusticana" and the Verismo in Italian dramatic music.

- Music, astronomy and Keplero.

- Music and Neurosciences.

- The pulse of the hearth of the Mediterranean: an excursus on rithms and percussions in the arabic musical tradition of the Mediterranean Sea.

- Vincenzo Bellini from Catania to Paris, a Sicilian composer in the European context.

- Environmental sciences and the mediteranean environment as a source of inspiration an material for Music.

- Computer Science and Music: tools and new perspective for music composition and performances.

- Artistic visualization of music: from music analysis to computer graphics.

- The social role of traditional music: an antropological perspective on the living

musical tradition of Southern Italy.

Venues:

The school will be held in the beautiful venues of the Botanical Garden of the University of Catania and the old Benedectine Monastry (one of the largest in Europe), where the Faculty of Literature and Philosophy is now located.

Accomodation:

Students will be hosted in the students dormitories of the University of Catania.

Social activities:

The social activities will consist in visits and excursions to sites of historical, cultural and naturalistic interest, as well as in a series of music performances.

Minimum expected number of participants: 20.
