The 21st Calderdale Way Relay
Pudsey and Bramley won the 21st open Screentone Calderdale Way relay. Paul Sheard and Jason Hemsley carried the baton over Norland and Ripponden to Cragg Vale to hand over in third place just over a minute adrift of Clayton veterans Hall and Aspinall.
However, Steve Neill and Steve Bottomley pulled into the lead on leg two and although Clayton’s Gary Wilkinson and Ian Greenwood were only 20 seconds adrift by Centre Vale Park Todmorden after leg 2 and Roger Brewster and Graham Cunliffe drew level by the Blackshawhead hand over at the end of stage three, the Pudsey men steadily opened the gap to over six minutes by the start of leg six (Shelf) and were not headed. They retained their title in 6 hours 5 mins and 28 seconds and take their 8th win in the biggest single day off road event in Britain.
Pudsey’s total number of open victories now equals that of Bingley Harriers, with only Rossendale (3 wins) and Clayton le Moors (2 wins) having a look in over the 21 years.
Clayton veterans came closest ever to a vet’s team taking outright victory with a superb squad including some recent (or ‘young’) vets, finishing just 5 mins down by the Copley finish.
Todmorden Harriers surprised many (but not themselves) with a terrific performance to take third place, having been in second place at the end of leg four thanks to Sean Willis and Alex Whittem who set off a minute down on Clayton vets and finished a minute up.
Ilkley Harriers won the ladies trophy for the first - and hopefully not the last time, in 7 hours 33 minutes 58 sec, beating Holmfirth and nine times relay winners Clayton ladies.
The mixed category was again hotly contested and Pudsey lifted that award 12 minutes faster than their only other previous win in 2000 but fellow Leeds club Valley Striders were not far behind.
Finally, Clayton retained our newest award, for the first “B” team 23rd overall in 6-54-14.
Though heavy underfoot conditions made leg times generally a few minutes slow, a new leg record of 44-02 was set by Carole Waterhouse and Rosie Edwards (Halifax Harriers B) on stage 3.
A few complaints were heard about short-cutting and cheating. We cannot mark the route or marshal the moors. We can only trust you to play fair and stay on the prescribed race route. By the feedback at Copley, most of you seemed to have had an enjoyable day out which makes the mammoth task of organising the event worthwhile
This year, at least twenty teams did not enter the relay early enough and were left disappointed. For reasons of safety and to help minimise traffic congestion at leg changeovers we are limited to 100 teams (that is 1200 fell runners!!)
Forms are sent out by our entries secretary in good time to team club captains, then processed on a first come first served basis. Please enter early next year to avoid missing out.
