Summer Reading and Writing Project

Qtr. 1 Due: Friday, August 28, 2015

Directions:

Read Tangerine by Edward Bloor.

Complete a “Book in a …” project.

Outside (25 Points)

Choose a container that pertains to the theme of the book, or use your own creative ideas (manila envelope, paper bag, canister with a lid, box, or any other container that you can imagine). Decorate the container with details appropriate to the novel. Viewers should know something about the book by examining the outside of the container. Be sure your container is labeled with your first and last name, title of the book, and author.

Inside (75 Points)

The inside of the container should include the following materials pertaining to the book:

1. Report - Write five-paragraph summary of the book. Use the following format for your essay:

Introduction

State the title of the book, author, and genre

Give your initial impression before reading the book

Characters

Write about the major characters described with details

Write about any minor characters

Plot

Identify the main conflict(s)

Describe the climax of the story

Write about the resolution of the conflict(s)

Setting

Give the setting(s) described with details

Tell whether the story is written about the past, present, or future

Conclusion

Give your final impression/opinion and favorite part of the book

2. Vocabulary - Create a ten-word, alphabetized, illustrated glossary of unfamiliar words from the book. Write a one- to two-sentence definition for each word.

3. Symbols - Choose five items that depict the story in some way. These items may be tangible or a pictorial representation. For each item, write a two- to three-sentence rationale that explains why you chose that particular object.

4. Conventions - Review your resource: How to Type and Turn in a Perfect Assignment. Your report must be typed using an easy-to-read, size 12-point font (such as Century Gothic, Times New Roman, or Calibri). The report must be limited to three (3) typed pages. Use only the front sides of 8.5” X 11” plain, white paper. Line spacing must be double-spaced using 1” margins on top, bottom, and sides.
