Student: Janet Netz,

I will not be in class on Thursday April 16, so could you please cover this on Thursday April 23?

Problem: Daisy E. Willard, husband’s great great grandmother on father’s side. I want to find information about her parents, including mother’s maiden name, and hopefully their parents as well.

Note 1: There is a prominent family descended from Simon Willard, of fame in the Revolutionary War; there is a *lot* of information on this Willard family. Nothing I’ve found ever suggested my Willards are connected to these Willards.

Note 2: Family lore is that my Willards are related to Frances Willard, famous educator and temperance leader

Lead: I found an index for vital statistics reported in the San Francisco Morning Call. I have received these files. The two children are not part of my Willards. Edward M. is the son of Frank P. and Lizzie F. of Oakland. Infant is the daughter of Edd and Nellie Willard of San Francisco. This does raise the question if other Edd Willard’s were not my Willards. The parents lived at 23rd St. near Mission.

I learned from Eleanora’s death notice that she was from Brockville, Canada.

Willard, Edward M. ... died in 1878 ... age 5 months ... 1878D-4097
Willard, Eleonora Earle ... died in 1892 ... age 51 ... 1892D-6859

Willard, infant dau of Edd ... died in 1870 ... age 15 days ... 1870D-1885

Ideas:

Trace Edward A. Willard after his mother’s death; perhaps additional information from him will give insights into his parents.

Search for records in Brockville, Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

Look for Willard censuses for 1830, 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870 [have 1880, 1890 burned]

Look for Earle censuses in Vermont and Canada for 1840, 1850, 1860, 1870, 1880, 1890 [Eleanor probably married approx. 1865 (based on 1868 birth year of youngest child), but might find her family]

Look for Willard-Earle marriage, Vermont or Canada, approx. 1865

Eleanor ?? (find surname), born in Canada

Daisy’s mother

Death notice suggests her name is Eleanora Earle; birth date 4/19/1840 in Brockville, Leeds, Ontario, Canada.

1880 Census gives first name

1880, 1900, 1910 Censuses confirm Canada (English)

1880 Census: both her parents born in Canada

1880 implies birth year circa 1839

Edward Willard, born in Vermont

Daisy’s father

1880 Census gives name Edd.

1880, 1900 Censuses confirm Vermont

1880 Census: both her parents born in Vermont

1880 implies birth year circa 1824

Think death year circa 1890 (1890 City Directory includes listing for Edward, but also one identifying Eleanor as a widow)

Information on Daisy E. Willard

Daisy’s middle initial from marriage license

Daisy’s birth date: 1/19/1875; but could be 1873, 1874, or 1876 based on various sources, in San Francisco, CA

1873: 1900 Census gives birth month and year as Jan. 1873; 1910 Census inferred from age;

1/19/1876 in San Francisco: from NY Passenger lists

California place of birth: 1900 Census

1910 Census says born in Massachusetts, but I think that is just wrong; the only document that suggests Massachusetts

Have her death certificate: 2/23/1938, in Chicago, IL

Censuses for Daisy w/her parents: 1880

Married in Chicago in 1894; how/where did she and her husband (Frank G. Mason) meet? When did she leave California?

Censuses for Daisy w/husband: 1900, 1910
