This was the first meeting of this group. We discussed what our objectives would be going forward, how to share information, and had a great discussion that helped everyone begin to become familiar with how shelving is handled at the various libraries represented.

We welcome any new attendees to future meetings.

Book

Martha passed around a book published by ALA titled Hiring, Training, and Supervising Library Shelvers by Patricia Tunstall. It is a good resource for our group.

Introductions and Information Sharing

We went around the table and introduced ourselves.

Discussion on General Shelving Needs at Each Library

Each person present shared how many shelving positions, the various job titles and responsibilities, how many hours, whether the position is benefitted, and breakdown of adult, college student, and high school employees at their library.

The intention is to compile a comprehensive and understandable table showing what each library’s practices are. We will post the compiled information on the XGV website.

Hiring Practices

Following the same around the table process, each library representative shared their process for hiring new Shelvers. Those that brought samples of their job descriptions, interviewing questions, and testing tools passed them around.

Again, the intention is to compile a comprehensive and understandable table showing what each library’s practices are pertaining to this subject and have it posted on the site.

Where Do We Go From Here?

We decided the XGV website would be the logical place to post information. Since some of the information is sensitive and should not be viewed by everyone and anyone, Kandice is going to “lock down” the access to only members of the group. Kandice has added a Shelver/Page Resources section to the site. Everyone who was not already a member was urged to join.

The address for the site is http://xgvcircmanagers.webs.com/

We plan to have meeting minutes, job descriptions, interview questions and procedures, tests and/or assessment tools, and training materials posted there. It is also our hope to have surveys conducted through the site also. Kandice is looking into this. If that is not possible we will do it the old fashioned way and post with all other information gleaned and shared.

Everyone was encouraged to send their job descriptions, training manuals, interview questions, assessment tools and anything else they would like to share on the website to Kandice Krettler at

This brought us to our scheduled adjournment time.

NEXT MEETING: January 15th, 2014, 9:30 AM at the Roselle Public Library

Adjourned at 12:00 PM
