POQUOSON SHARKS ANNOUNCE COMPETITIVE SOCCER TRYOUTS

Islander Soccer Association Affiliates with Tidewater Sharks FC

Poquoson, VA, April 27, 2013– The Poquoson Sharks, a new competitive travel soccer team affiliated with the Tidewater Sharks FC and a program of the Islander Soccer Association, will be holding tryouts for boys and girls ages 8 – 18 beginning May 4. Tryouts are free and players may register at the field on the day of the event or through an online registration link which will be available shortly at tidewatersharks.com. The Poquoson Sharks were formed by ISA to offer a local, high-quality and cost-effective competitive travel program in the Poquoson area that will ultimately support superior high school soccer teams. The Poquoson Sharks will be competing in the Virginia Soccer League in the fall of 2013, and will participate in tournaments as selected by each team. Player fees are being finalized, but the cost will range between $300 and $450 per season depending on the age group. The Puma uniform package will be $90 and must be purchased every two years. The number and age group for teams will be determined based on interest at tryouts and some teams may have merged age groups. Due to VA Soccer League rules a player can only play one age group above his or her actual age group. Although encouraged, players do not have to participate in both fall and spring seasons.

About the ISA

The Islander Soccer Association was formed in 1998 with the objective to support the support, encourage and advance the Poquoson High School Soccer programs. Since its organization, the ISA has provided fundraising, support and equipment for the teams in addition to providing scholarships for graduating seniors. In the spring of 2012, the ISA decided that in order to build exceptional high school soccer teams the ISA needed to support player development from the earliest ages with professional developmental soccer training. While there are several soccer clubs in the area offering programs, most are very costly and are beyond the financial reach of many families in Poquoson. In the winter of 2013, the ISA voted to create and support a U-10 boy’s team that played in the Tidewater Advanced Soccer League and was coached by Poquoson High School Varsity Coach, Charlie Sneddon. Rather than creating a new club in Poquoson, the ISA voted to explore an affiliation with an existing area soccer club to provide advanced developmental soccer programs beginning in the fall of 2013.
