SAFETY OPERATING PROCEDURES

Bench Grinder

DO NOT use this machine unless properly authorised and versed in its safe use and operation.

Eye protection required. / Long and loose hair should be contained.
Appropriate footwear with substantial enclosed uppers must be worn. / Close fitting/protective clothing (short sleeves, no gloves) preferred.
Rings and jewellery must not be worn. / Hearing and respiratory protectionmay be required.

Unless under direct instruction, only one person to operate this machine at any one time.

PRE-OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

  1. Check all equipment to be used for serviceability. Immediately tag and report suspect or defective equipment.
  2. Check workspace, walkways and machine surrounds to ensure no slip/trip hazards are present. Take care with extension lead routing – cover leads if possible.
  3. Locate and ensure you are familiar with the operation of the ON/OFF control switch.
  4. Ensure all guards and safety shields are in position before starting the grinder.
  5. Ensure that a gap of no greater than 1.5 mm exists between wheels and rest.
  6. Check that wheels are not glazed or loaded. Manually rotate to check they are running true. Note: Respiratory protection is mandatory when dressing wheels.
  7. DO NOT attempt to grind non-ferrous metals on a standard bench grinder.

OPERATIONAL SAFETY CHECKS

  1. Stand to the side and let the wheels come up to full speed before starting to grind.
  2. Do not grind on the side of the wheel.
  3. Small objects must not be held by hand.
  4. Never leave the machine running unattended.
  5. Do not bend down near the machine whilst it is running.
  6. Never force the workpiece against the wheel.
  7. Slowly move the workpiece across the face of the wheel in a uniform manner.
  8. Use water for coolant. Any spills should be immediately absorbed.

HOUSEKEEPING

  1. Leave the machine and surrounding area in a safe, clean and tidy state.
