The 90-minute documentary, filmed in 4K, explores Bosch’s masterpiece The Garden of Earthly Delights through a conversation between art historian Reindert Falkenburg and leading figures from the world of culture, including art historians, artists, writers, philosophers and musicians. Among them: Salman Rushdie, Orhan Pamuk, Cees Nooteboom, Nélida Piñón, Laura Restrepo, Ludovico Einaudi, William Christie, Silvia Pérez Cruz, Renée Fleming, Leonardo García Alarcón, Miquel Barceló, Isabel Muñoz, José Manuel Ballester, Max, Albert Boadella and Michel Onfray; Pilar Silva, curator of the Bosch exhibition at the Museo del Prado, and historians Philippe de Montebello, John Elliott, Carmen Iglesias, Alejandro Vergara, Xavier Salomon and Elisabeth Taburet-Delahaye.

Shot in Spain, France, the Netherlands and Switzerland, the film examines one of Jheronimus Bosch’s most enigmatic and iconic works from the standpoint of the relationship between image and spectator, accompanied by a carefully chosen soundtrack with themes performed by Ólafur Arnalds, Elvis Costello, Arvo Pärt and Lana del Rey, among others.

Bosch. The Garden of Dreams will have its Mexican premiere on September 17 and 19 in the charge of the Cinépolis chain, which operates 27 theaters nationwide. From September 24, it will show in Millerton (New York), Miami (Florida), Santa Fe (New Mexico), Larkspur (California), Sedona (Arizona) and the Detroit Institute of Arts (Michigan). On October 27, the film will open in over 40 cinemas in France, while the United Kingdom, Italy, Poland, Hungary and the Czech Republic have all expressed an interest in this landmark piece marking the fifth centenary of the artist’s death.

In Spain, the feature-length documentary has played at over 70 theaters since its premiere on June 9 this year. The strength of its reception is evidenced by an unusually extended run: on September 21 and 22 it will be screened at the Kinépolis cinemas in Madrid, Granada, Alicante and Paterna (Valencia) and on October 6, 12, 20 and 27 at the Broadway cinemas in Valladolid.

Movistar+ gave the film its TV premiere on July 5 last and continues to feature it in its programming. On Sunday, September 4 it was shown simultaneously at 20:30 on the “La 2” channel and website of public television broadcaster RTVE.

Its success parallels the extraordinary popularity enjoyed by “Bosch. The 5th Centenary Exhibition.” Organized by the Museo del Prado with the BBVA Foundation as sole sponsor, by the end of August the show had welcomed 428,527 visitors. The Madrid museum has decided to extend its run by two more weeks, to September 25, with special opening times on Monday to Thursday from 10:00 to 22:00, and Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 10:00 to midnight.
