Job purpose
The ZI clean rooms are a £100+m highly specialised facility for undertaking fabrication of photonic and electronic devices with many specialist tools and processes. Work is undertaken by a team of Process Engineers, Technicians and the academic Research community within the Faculty as well as significant commercial consulting and processing activities for client organisations throughout the world.
The post will be responsible for maintaining best practise in processing across the cleanroom with particular emphasis on electron beam lithography. The post holder will have significant specialist knowledge in Cleanroom processing in order to be able to maintain control of the large number of standard processes used, as well as the ability to develop new processes as necessary. The post holder may also be responsible for delivery of commercial processing work, ensuring the quality of delivered processing.

1.  / To deliver in-depth specialist technical support for the Zepler Institute’s research agenda via significant contributions to process development on the cleanroom suite of specialist tools, primarily focussed on the JEOL electron beam lithography system. Design, develop and implement improvements to the tools and/or procedures for optimal use using innovative solutions, harnessing tool vendor software and hardware upgrades where appropriate. / 60 %
2.  / Keep abreast of technical developments and contribute to academic publications in the area of technical specialism, including Plasma Processing systems and electron beam lithography, present findings at national/international workshops/conferences / 10 %
3.  / Provide process and technical support to the Cleanroom Maintenance Management Engineer to achieve a high level of machine up time/performance / 10 %
4.  / Analyse/interpret technical data resulting from process development and provide effective feedback to Cleanroom Users – students, academics or external customer / 20 %
Internal and external relationships /
Tool Vendors – discuss tool issues, new developments and modifications. Supervise vendor process engineer visits.
Process Engineers – discuss day to day tool issues, feedback results of qualification runs/experiments, collaborate on upstream and downstream process interactions
Academic and Research Students – discuss process issues, feedback results, provide training and technical expertise
Cleanroom Maintenance Management engineer – provide process information/tool issue information to allow reactive maintenance response times. Help develop preventative maintenance procedures to improve tool performance and machine up time

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Criteria / Essential / Desirable / How to be assessed
Qualifications, knowledge and experience / Degree or equivalent professional qualification in an engineering discipline, preferably semiconductor related.
Substantial practical and theoretical experience of developing and maintaining processes on cleanroom equipment,
Knowledge of electron beam lithography systems such as JEOL or Visteq
Ability to relate process parameter data to device test results allowing process fine tuning
Working knowledge of Health and Safety pertaining to cleanroom working – MSDS, COSHH and Risk Assessments / Knowledge of Design of Experiments, Response surface models and screening experiments allowing structured process development
Knowledge of plasma processing techniques and equipment / Interview/CV
Planning and organising / Ability to organise own workload to ensure work is completed to a high standard and to deadline.
Ability to plan, manage and deliver support for the facility through significant projects and planned works over a period of several months, complementing the overall facility strategy over a longer period. / Interview/CV
Problem solving and initiative / Ability to fault find at process system level within complex machinery and systems.
