broadcloth: cloth made from carded wool in plain weave and fulled after weaving.
calico: cotton cloth of many grades and varieties first made in India and later in the West.
cambric:a fine white linen cloth in plain weave.
cassinet: a light mixed cloth, a modification of cassimere with the warp of cotton and the weft of very fine wool or wool and silk, in twill weave; American cassinet was a coarse variety of satinet and was frequently called Negro cloth.
cassimere: a medium-weight twilled woolen cloth of soft texture; plain varieties, competitors of broadcloth, were used for clothing.
circassian: mixture of wool and cotton made to imitate fashionable cashmere shawls.
clouded: fabric with clouded or shaded effects produced by dyeing or printing warp threads in different colors prior to weaving.
corduroy: a coarse, durable cotton fabric, having a piled surface, like that of velvet, raised in cords, ridges or ribs. dimity:any of a number of harness-loom patterened fabrics.
durant: glazed worsted of plain weave, used generally for gentlemen’s clothes.
ferret: tape, ribbon or binding, often used to edge a garment.
flannel: cloth made of woolen yarn slightly twisted in the spinning and of open texture.
fustian: a general term covering a large category of linen and cotton or, later, all cotton textiles; may also include wool in their composition.
holland: generic name for linen cloth.
jackonet (jaconet): a thin, closely woven cotton textile, thicker than muslin, slighter than cambric, and thinner than nainsook, used for dresses, neckcloths, and infants’ clothese.
linen: cloth of many grades and weaves made from flax.
linsey or linsey-woolsey: a coarse cloth made of linen warp and woolen weft; often produced in homes for personal use.
marseilles: fine quilted fabric used for petticoats.
muslin: a fine cotton textile first made in India.
nankeen: cotton cloth of plain weave originally sold at Nankin in China and made from a yellow variety of cotton; later made in other colors.
Negro cloth: see cassinet.
osnaburg: coarse, unbleached linen or hempen cloth first made in Osnabruck, Germany and commonly used for trousers; made of cotton in the 19th century in blue and white or brown and white, stripes, checks, or solid colors and used for overalls and farmers’ clothing in the United States.
ratteen (rattench): a thick woolen stuff, twill woven, mostly used in linings.
sagathy: a slight woolen stuff of twill weave; a kind of serge or ratteen, sometimes mixed with a little silk.
satinet: a very slight, thin sort of satin, chiefly used for ladies’ summer nightgowns; ordinarily striped.
stuff: a general term for worsted cloths.
surtout: a close fitting coat similar to a frock coat.
thickset: a kind of cotton fustian or velvet made either plain or flowered.
