Lesson Plan 1

State Standards

Standard 7 – Guiding Question “How is the earth affected by long-term and short term geological cycles and the influence of man.”

GLE 0707.7.8 Determine the impact of man's use of renewable and nonrenewable resources on future supplies.

GLE 0707.7.9 Evaluate how human activities affect the condition of the earth's land, water, and atmosphere.

SPI 0707.7.7 Analyze and evaluate the impact of man's use of earth's land, water, and atmospheric resources.

Learning Objectives

-Students will better understand an example of a renewable resource.

-Students will identify what ethanol is.

-Students will understand why there is a need for fuel alternatives.

-Students will understand what renewable resources are.

Time

30-40 minutes

Tools/equipment

-Promethean Board

-Bushel of corn/container

-Paper, pencils

-notebook

-sticky notes

Vocabulary

Alcohol, Bushel, Ethanol, E10, Gallon, Proof

Attention Grabber(Use Promethean Board)

Place bushel of corn in front of room on table. “Did you know that 10 billion bushels of corn were produced in the U.S. In 2000. This is a bushel and weighs an estimated 56 lbs. Think about types of food, additives, and by products that come from corn. You have 2 minutes.

(share examples with students on Promethean Board)

***Each bushel of corn can produce each one of the examples of below

-31.5 lbs of starch

-33lbs of sweetener

-10- 1 lb boxes cereal

-10- 8 oz packages of cheese curls

-17lbs of Carbon Dioxide

-1.5 lbs of corn oil, margarine, mayonnaise, salad dressing, printer inks

“As you can see, there are many uses for a bushel corn but let's focus primarily on ethanol. Who has heard of ethanol? What do you think it is? Ethanol is a renewable resource. There are 7 facts around room. When I say “move , go and take your notebook and write it down. Go back to your seat and review. You have 3 minutes”

(Post on Promethean Board)

-Ethanol can be used as a fuel when blended with gasoline

-Alcohol is shown as C-O-H

-Is colorless and has a mild odor

-Boils at 172F

-freezes at -170F

-one gallon weighs 6.8lbs

-When burned it produces a blue flame and with no residue and considerable energy making it an ideal fuel

“So why ethanol now?” (use promethean board)

-E10 blend(10% ethanol and 90% gasoline)

-stabilizes price for American farmer

-environment improves, carbon monoxide emissions are reduced

-it is a fuel alternative

Closing Activity

“On your sticky note, write 3 “nuggets” of knowledge that you learned today or thought was interesting. Then share it with your friend”
