TNS mrbi/JNLR 2006/07 Summary Results
The latest JNLR/TNS mrbi report into radio listening is published today (23rd August,2007). It covers the 12-month period from July 2006 to June 2007.
The latest results show daily radio listening at the traditional high level of 85% - that is 85% of all adults listening each weekday.
A total of 15,000 people were interviewed during the survey period by TNS mrbi, on behalf of JNLR - Joint National Listenership Research - that is funded by all national and local stations, BCI, AAI, and IAPI.
The following tables are the key top line results from the ‘week-day’ report for the main radio stations at National level, within Dublin and CorkCounties, and the South East Region.
While Tables 1-4 show the proportion of adults tuning to the stations at some time during the day, the depth of listening or loyalty to various stations is best reflected in the share of listening achieved by each station, as shown in Tables 5-8, whilst Table 9 provides information on the ‘Home Local’ Stations in each Franchise Area.
Table 1 shows that half of the Irish population listen to a National radio station on an average day, but slightly more (53%) tune into their local or regional station daily. Local/regional radio is particularly strong in the Cork and South East areas. However, in Dublin, National radio has the slight edge.
Listenership levels continue at a very high level in Ireland – on average we listen to more than 3½ hours of radio per day during the prime 7am to 7pm time,(Irish Adults listening Mon-Fri). In this report, national radio has increased its share by 2% nationally, pushing it into a marginal lead over local/regional stations. The lead widens somewhat in Dublin where the positions are 58% vs 42%. However, in Cork and the South East region the local/regional franchise is in a strong leading position. Among the younger 15-34 year old audience, local radio is particularly strong in the Dublin and Cork regions.
Finally, local radio continues to show a strong performance in the individual markets across the country – in many areas reaching more than 40% of the local adult population daily. In particular, Highland Radio, Limerick’s Live 95, Shannonside/Northern Sound and MWR reach more than half of their potential audience on an average day.
