Minutes of the Executive Committee of COMPRES from meeting of Monday, Nov 5, 2007

1. Minutes of ExComm meeting of Oct 22, 2007
Approved for installation on COMPRES website.
2. Facilities Committee
Duffy anticipates receiving annual progress reports for Year #1 and program plans and budget requests for Year #2 for all of the COMPRES-supported facilities, including:
West Coast Synchrotrons--Jeanloz and Clark
X-ray DAC at NSLS--Duffy and Weidner
Multi-anvil X-ray at NSLS--Weidner and Vaughan
Infrared DAC at NSLS--Hemley and Liu
3. Infrastructure Development Committee
Ross reported on annual progress reports for Year #1 and program plans and budget requests for Year #2 including both ongoing ID projects and new proposals received.
As of this date, proposals for ongoing projects have been received from:
Mutil-anvil cells at ArizonaState
Inelastic X-ray scattering at the APS
HPSynC
New projects:
DAC facility at Princeton
Workshops
SNAP-COMPRES joint workshop at Oak Ridge in April 2008
Inelastic X-ray scattering workshop
High Pressure Workshop at the NSLS in May 2008
4. Proposed joint meeting between COMPRES and SNAP at Oak Ridge National Laboratory in April 2008. See also workshop proposal in item #3 above.
Liebermann will circulate this proposal for a discussion and decision at the next meeting of the ExComm on November 19,, 2007.
5. Report on visit by Liebermann to COMPRES-supported projects at GSECARS at APS.
Johnson noise project—Yanbin Wang.
Testing in multi-anvil apparatus to 3 GPa underway in three different cells.
D-DIA30 apparatus-Yanbin Wang
Designs completed. Awaiting advice from Getting on steels, etc before going to bid.
CO2-laser heating system for DAC—Vitali Prakapenka [Duffy is PI]
Now installed on 13ID-D beamline at GSECARS. Initial tests provided data on melting of Fe-free magnesium silicates to circa 7000K. .
Brillouin spectroscopy—Vitali Prakapenka [Bass is PI]
User base expanding.
Gas-loading system for DACs—Mark Rivers
Safety approval expected soon.
Ruby fluorescence system added by Prakapenka.
Estimated cost of system #1: $80-85K plus about $15-20K in labor.
Single-crystal diffraction—Przemek Dera
Major new system to be installed on 13BM-C beamline at GSECARS.
6. Long-range strategic planning for COMPRES
In response to a question from Brown, Williams stated that such a process would commence early in 2008 with the objective of having recommendations to report at the 2008 Annual Meeting in June at Cheyenne Mountain Resort.
7. 2008 Annual Meeting at CheyenneMountain Resort in Colorado Springs from June 25-28.
Carl Agee has accepted an invitation to Chair the Program Committee for this meeting and will be seeking input from the ExComm on other members to serve as well as ideas for potential keynote speakers.
