The Crucible—Personal Grievances

In Act I, tensions exist between the set of characters listed below. Discuss what those tensions or grievances are. Why does the first character hate or resent the second? What arguments erupt between the two in Act I?

Abigail Williams v. Goody Proctor

-Abigail gets fired for having an affair, Abigail is jealous for not having mr. proctor

-Abigail says she a bitter, cold woman

-Abigail wants to kill her by drinking the blood

-Goody Proctor won’t attend church because she doesn’t want to sit next to something solied.

Goody Putnam v. Rebecca Nurse

-Goody is jealous of Rebecca’s 11 children and 26 grand-children.

-Both families have land deputes, nurses wanted to separate into their own town.

-Goody Putnam thinks its witchcraft while Rebecca says it’s a silly-season.

-The nurse family voted against the Putnam’s man for minister.

John Proctorv. Thomas Putnam

-They both fight over land.

-Proctor says the town votes by name not by acreage.

-Proctor resents Putnam who he sees as power hungry and controlling.

-Putman believes its witch craft and proctor disagrees.

-Putnam accuses Proctor of not attending church.

-Proctor feels guilty of committing adultery.

John Proctor v. Reverend Parris

-Proctor thinks Parris is jumping into witchcraft.

-All Parris talks about is hell and trying to guilt people

-Proctor sees Parris as not a man of god

-Parris accuses proctor of leading the faction against him.

-Proctor does not believe that Parris should own the meeting house.

Reverend Parris v.His parishioners

-Parris’s authority is not respected or trusted after 3 years.

-They feel like Parris like the money more than the church.

-He scares them talking about hell and people don’t want to take their children.

-His salutary is 60 pounds but he wanted 66 pounds plus firewood.

-He thinks he’s better than everyone else because he attended Harvard.

-He’s selfish and cares more about him than others.

-Parris wants to own the ministers house.

Thomas Putman and others v. Giles Corey

-Corey has been to court 6 times.

-Corey sued proctor.

-Putman’s father tried to take away Corey’s land

-Both Putnam and Corey support calling for Hale.
