Course Overview: This course is designed to present a variety of scientific concepts in the field of Physics. The course is very mathematically oriented, and will use a quantitative as well as a qualitative approach. It will integrate classroom presentations with hands-on laboratory activities and engineering focused projects.
1st subterm:· Review (Sci. Method, sig figs...)
· Projectile Motion
· Newton’s Laws
· Work, Energy, Momentum
· Circular Motion & Gravity / 2nd subterm:
· Waves & Sound
· Electrostatics
· Circuits (DC)
· Magnetism
· Relativity (If we have time)
Grading Policy: Grades are based on the percentage of points earned on tests, quizzes, labs, homework, and class work. Grades will be assigned according to the following scale.
98 - 100 / A+ / 77 - 79 / C+94 – 97 / A / 74 - 76 / C
90 - 93 / A- / 70 - 73 / C-
87 - 89 / B+ / 66 - 69 / D+
84 - 86 / B / 60 - 65 / D
80 - 83 / B- / 0 - 59 / F
Materials: Scientific calculator, graph and lined paper
Homework: Homework will be assigned on most nights, and will be due the following day unless otherwise stated. All paper assignments and specified digital assignments are to be submitted on Google Classroom prior to the beginning of class (BEFORE the bell rings). All assignments must be handwritten unless otherwise specified. If you are having technical difficulties it is your responsibility to contact me before class starts. You may email me a copy of your homework in an emergency situation but you may not make a habit of it. If you do not have access to the technology necessary for this come talk to me and we will work out another way for you to turn in your homework. Submitting homework on Google Classroom protects both you and your instructor from lost assignments. It also allows us to begin learning content immediately at the beginning of class. Students with a 95% or better in the homework category will have their lowest test score dropped.
Students should feel free to discuss problem-solving strategies with each other, however I ask anything that is written down to be turned in MUST be representative of your understanding. Turning in work you do not understand is considered cheating (see Academic Honesty section)
Students are expected to seek out help with any questions they have on the homework. If a question is left blank without any obvious effort to find the solution, the student will lose points on the homework. There are plenty of resources available on the internet. There is no reason to leave a question completely blank. There will be time to check answers and discuss homework questions at the beginning of each class period.
Late work: Late work will be given up to 50% credit if turned in before the end of the unit. Late assignments must be turned in on Google Classroom. Late passes may be used for full credit on a late assignment. Late passes do not apply to large projects or labs that will lose one letter grade for every day they are late.
Absences and Make-Up Work: A prolonged absence, or repeated absences can greatly affect your level of learning in this course and consequently your grade. In the event of an absence, it is your responsibility to find out what was missed (on the website) and arrange to make it up. You will be given the number of days you were absent to make up the work and turn it in. If you are absent on the day homework is due, with an excused absence, you should still turn it in on Google Classroom. It may be turned in the day you return to school in emergency situations. It is your responsibility to turn it in, I won’t ask for it. If you are absent you should email your teacher with a brief message apologizing for missing class and letting them know that you have seen the assignments on the website and that you have made an attempt to learn the material by watching help videos at home. If you will be absent on a test day I expect you to communicate with me via email. You will be expected to take the test the day you return unless prior arrangements have been made. Make up tests are similar to regular test with the exception that you won’t be given the equations.
Class Website: (newburyparkhighschool.net/keeler): A class website will be maintained which will contain daily agendas, labs, homework assignments, worksheets, keys, powerpoints, etc.
Behavior Guidelines:
· When the tardy bell rings, all students should be in their seat with their notes and materials out.
· Stay in your seat and on task until the dismissal bell rings unless otherwise directed by your teacher.
· If you choose to eat in class be sure to clean up after yourself. If this becomes an issue you will no longer be allowed to eat in class.
· Summary of classroom rules: RESPECT yourself, others, and the area. Even minor infractions (such as talking during lecture) will result in some form of disciplinary action after no more then two warnings have been given.
· Put your cellphone on silent and keep it in your backpack unless otherwise instructed.
Tardy Policy:
Help: If you need help, or fear you are falling behind talk to me. I can help you. I am generally here every day before and after school. Please give me a heads up if you are planning on coming in for help as I frequently have short meetings right after school.
Tips for Using Google Classroom
*Download the Google Classroom and Drive apps for your phone.
*Download one of the free scanner apps that will turn your picture into a pdf. Your homework should be submitted in pdf form under each specific assignment unless otherwise specified.
*Make sure your phone or device is connected to wifi when trying to submit an assignment. Often the app won’t submit an assignment on data instead of wifi
*Make sure you submit the correct assignment and that it actually submitted. Failure to do so will result in a loss of credit. I will notice if you submit a different assignment than the one that is due. I check all Google Classroom submissions closely. It is your responsibility to keep track of your own submissions.
