More Than 200 Local Students Experience STEM Through Golf

Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic hosts the Chevron STEM ZONE to teach

students the value of science, technology, engineering and math

PASCAGOULA, Miss., March 28, 2016 - The Chevron STEM ZONE featured at the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic this weekend will host more than 200 students from middle school and recreational programs from Thursday through Sunday. The exhibit is also open to all tournament attendees.

This unique, student-friendly experience demonstrates the scientific concepts that underlie the game of golf through a variety of learning stations which highlight science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). The STEM ZONE will feature Archimedes’ Principle, speed versus slope, Bernoulli’s Principle and many more. Students will be guided through the activities by current Tulane University students and Chevron employees.

The STEM ZONE is one facet of Chevron’s broad effort to encourage students to pursue STEM-based educations and careers. Other projects have included the annual Fuel Your School program, and a $500,000 partnership with Project Lead the Way.

"As the number of STEM-related jobs continues to grow, it is essential that we help today’s students be prepared by encouraging their interest in these subjects,” said Alan Sudduth, Chevron public and government affairs manager for Mississippi. "By partnering with the Mississippi Gulf Resort Classic to host the STEM ZONE, we can provide students with a fun, hands-on introduction to STEM that we hope will launch a lifelong interest in science and technology."

The STEM ZONE is a part of Chevron’s $100 million dollar education commitment to support programs that increase access to and improve the quality of education and career and technical training. Chevron partners with education organizations, government officials, non-profit organizations and community leaders to develop and support innovative programs that invest in tomorrow’s workforce by educating students, training teachers, providing classroom resources, supporting educational standards, funding out-of-school activities and preparing workers to excel in their jobs.
