Minutes from the Jan. 12, 2010 OSHRM Membership Meeting

There were 43 members at the January membership meeting, almost double the number that were at the December Holiday meeting.

Soup & salad were provided by Olive Garden.

Sharla Austin-Darnell, Existing Industry Manager of Greater Owensboro EDC, spoke briefly about a wage & benefits survey that she will provide to Linda and Lana. Linda will put it on the website and I will attach it to the next mass e-mail that goes out to all members. Sharla asked that we please take the time to fill out the survey. Dave pointed out how beneficial that these surveys are to H/R personnel when there are in contract negotiations and when we want to make comparisons to other companies in our area. Sharla assured us that that the process would be confidential and no one but her would know the identity of the person and company that submitted the survey. She will have results for us in March.

Erin McMahon, Wyatt, Tarrant, & Combs, LLP, presented the workshop on Genetic Information Non-Discrimination Act (GINA) Title II (employers) & I (Insurers and Health Plans) to us. It was very informative with hand-outs and a Q&A at the end. We should have the new poster “EEO is the law poster” posted at our workplace and our handbooks should include the genetic information as a protected category. Never inquire about your employees’ relatives’ health and do not include family medical history in any questionnaire or form that you distribute to employees. Do not inquire about the health of relatives in an interview or in the hiring process. If a doctor has put family medical history on a medical form of an employee, then put it in a separate “GINA” folder.

Dave reminded everyone that next month’s meeting will be held the 3rd Tuesday of Feb. (Feb. 16th) at KWC. Howard Blackburn will speak to us about Health Care Reform. If you go on the website there is a list of topics and speakers for each month of 2010 except July & December.

Gina Mitchell is conducting the membership drive and Dave reminded everyone to fill out your applications and get them back to Gina.

Margaret Cameron won the 50/50 and Linda Keller and Lana Chaney won the door prizes.

The meeting was closed at 1:00.
