USING LAUREATE SOFTWARE

Participant Handout

First Categories

¨  Teaches categorization skills using 60 nouns in 6 categories: animals, body parts, clothes, foods, utensils, and vehicles

¨  Students work with one category at a time and are asked to make a selection from either two or three pictures.

¨  Positive reinforcement through engaging animation occurs if the correct picutre is selected.

¨  For children beginning to read, text may be turned on to reinforce reading skills. (The workshop instructor should demonstrate how to turn the text on and off for workshop participants.)

¨  Each category contains three instructional activities: Review, Inclusion, and Exclusion.

¨  Review presents each word in a particular category. Example: "A horse is an animal."

¨  Inclusion asks the student to select a word which fits into a particular category. Example: "Which one is food?"

¨  Exclusion asks the student to identify the word which does not belong in a particular category. Example: "Which one is not a body part?"

Micro-LADS (Microcomputer Language Assessment and Development System)

¨  Contains seven modules which use over 600 pictures to train student comprehension of 46 fundamental grammatical structures

¨  Each module follows the same three-part format.

1)  The software introduces the grammatical form being trained.

2)  The software presents two or three pictures on the screen and the student is asked to choose the correct one.

3)  If the correct picture is chosen, an animated character performs amusing antics to provide positive reinforcement.
