5) Title of the Topic:
“AN EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF IMPACTS OF MASHA AS AN APATHYAIN THE HAEMATINIC ACTIVITY OF LOHA BHASMA”
6) Brief resume of the intended work
6.1 Need for the study:
Anaemia, which means “Lacking in blood” is among the most common diseases, affecting human beings. It denotes a shortage of rich red blood cells and colouring matter called Haemoglobin. The vast majority of anaemia’s are due to the failure of Haemoglobin synthesis as a result of iron deficiency.
The agents required in the formation of blood and used for the treatment of Anaemia’s are called haematinics.Loha is one such a drug explained under dhatu varga in Rasa Shastra ,administered in the form of Bhasma.
According to classical text books of Rasa Shastra, intake of some food factors is contraindicated during the administration Loha Bhama like Masha, Kushmanda1 etc.and named them as Apathya’s. By considering above factors, the study is planned to evaluate the impact of Masha as an apathya in the haematinic activity of Loha Bhasma.
6.2 Review of Literature:
1) Preparation of Loha Bhasma is explained in Rasa Ratna Samuchchaya.2
2) Apathya’s during the administration of Loha Bhasma is explained by Acharya Madhava1.
3) Information regarding the experimental study is available in Fundamental of Experimental Pharmacology.3
4) Explanation about Iron Deficiency Anaemia, Haemopoisis are present in Robbins Pathologic Basis of Disease.4
6.3 Previous work done:
1. Bhattacharya RC (1965). IPGTR&RA, GAU, Jamnagar, has done work on “Pandu Roga par Paaradaamruta tikshna Loha kaaryaveekshana”.5
2 Pathak KM (1979).Govt. AyurvedicCollege, BFUHS, Faridkot, has done work on “Loha Bhasma nirmana Evam Rakta-Kanoon par prabhava”.5

4. Sangolge Bandappa (2004).SDMCA, Udupi, RGUHS,Karnataka, has done work on “Preparation of Loha Bhasma and its clinical study in Pandu Roga w.s.r. to Iron Deficiency Anaemia”.5
6.4) Objectives of study:
A) Literary Study.
B) Pharmaceutical study.
C) Experimental study.
1. Experimental evaluation of haematinic effect of the Loha Bhasma.
2. Experimental evaluation of haematinic effect of Loha Bhasma along with Masha as an Apathya.
7) Materials and Methods:
7.1 Source of data:
A)Literary Study –Information will be collected from Ayurvedic classical text books, modern text books & relevant research literatures.
B)Pharmaceutical study-
a)Raw drugs will be collected from S.D.M Ayurvedic Pharmacy, Udupi.
b) Preparation of Loha Bhasma at S.D.M Ayurvedic Pharmacy.Udupi.
C) Experimental Study-
1) Albino Rats will be taken randomly from SDMCA Udupi Animal house for the study and grouped in to 4, each groupconsisting of 8 rats.
2) Haematinic effect of Loha Bhasma will be studied on Albino Rats.
3) Haematinic effect of Loha Bhasma along with Masha as an Apathya will be studied on Albino Rats.
7.2 Method of collecting of data(including sampling procedures if any)
.
Experimental Evaluation:
1) / Sample / 32 maleAlbino Rats will be selected randomly2) / Inclusive criteria / 1) Healthy male Albino Rats will be considered.
2) Weighing about 150-200 grams.
3) / Exclusive criteria / 1) Less than 150 grams more than 200 grams.
2) Diseased rats.
3) Rats which are under trial of other experiments
4) / Grouping / Each group having 8 Rats and will be kept in separate cages.
Group 1 - Control Group - 8 Rats
Group 2 - Test Group -8 Rats
Group 3 - Test Group -8 Rats
Group 4 - Test Group -8 Rats
5) / Intervention / Rat dose will be calculated on the basis of human dose by using standard conversion method.
6) / Mode of administration / Oral
7) / Duration / 96 hours
8) / Instrument used / Sahlis haemoglobin meter.
9) / Comparison / All groups are compared
10) / Assessment criteria / 1)Complete blood Count
2)Peripheral smear study
3)Reticulocyte count
11) / Statistical test / ANOVA
7.3) Dose the study require any investigation or Intervention to be conducted on patients or other humans or animals? If so please describe briefly.
Since this is an Experimental Study on male Albino Rats, that are maintained on Standard Laboratory, Foods and water, clinical study is not required.
