Motivational Interviewing (MI) skills are utilized by a broad range of health and social care professionals in diverse settings to facilitate behaviour/lifestyle change.
This two day workshop will introduce you to the core principles, strategies and concepts of motivational interviewing. The workshop is HSE funded and open to OTs and SLTs. Members and non members of IASLT and AOTI are welcome to apply.
Workshop Facilitator: James O’Shea.
James is an accredited Psychotherapist, Addiction Counsellor, Registered Psychiatric Nurse and Registered General Nurse. He has worked in the areas of Mental Health and Addiction in Irish settings for twenty seven years. He has extensive experience training health and social care professionals in the area of Motivational Interviewing. He is a member of the international network of motivational interviewing trainersIn 2012 he delivered a series of workshops to OTs and SLTs for IASLT and AOTI.
Course Content
The workshop will contain a mix of theory and practical sessions to include;
- Defining Motivational Interviewing
- Process - Spirit of Motivational Interviewing
- Review of Frameworks (Brief Intervention); SAOR - Substance Misuse/ 5As - Tobacco control
- Transtheoretical model of change
- Principles of MI and Implications for practice
- Motivational Interviewing: Strategies Overview
- Ambivalence
- Resistance
- Talking behaviour change - Examples from practice (DVD)
- Skills practice and application
- Dealing with ambivalence and resistance to change
- Application of principles and strategies to participants’ practice setting
Who can Apply
- OTs and SLTs
- Priority will be given to those currently working clinically, however recent graduates are welcome to apply and will be considered if vacancies arise.
- Therapists working in any practice area can apply such as Mental Health, Rehabilitation, PCCC. The principles and skills of MI can be transferred across a variety of practice settings and are not limited to Mental Health.

Places are limited. Late or incomplete applications may not be accepted. Successful applicants will be notified that they have a place at the workshop. A non refundable booking fee of €20 must then be forwarded to the AOTI office to secure your place at the workshop.
