Applying make-up

Highlight and Shadow notes

1.  The first step when applying any make-up is to apply a FOUNDATION to the area the make-up will be. The foundation should match the skin tone of the area you are applying to as close as possible. You will apply to the whole area make-up is being put on with a sponge or cotton ball. Make sure you have spread the foundation out smoothly and evenly on the area. (We call it foundation because it goes on first and everything else is built on it. Just like a foundation of a house.)

2.  HIGHLIGHTS are applied to areas of the face that reflect MORE light. When you are picking colors for highlights, you need to pick something lighter than your skin tone. When applying your wrinkles you will also look for your natural wrinkles. If you have already applied your shadows, you can put your highlights above them. There will be no highlights for the bags under the eyes or the sunk in cheeks since no light is reflected in those places.

3.  SHADOWS are applied to areas of the face that reflect LESS light. When picking the color for shadows, you need to pick something darker than your skin tone. When applying shadows you are looking for the natural wrinkles that will occur on the forehead, next to the eyes (crow’s feet), around the mouth, under the eyes, and on the soft part of the cheek. Keep in mind that the younger you are, the less wrinkles you have. Someone in their 20’s and 30’s my only have forehead wrinkles and crow’s feet. Someone in the 40’s and 50’s may have added mouth wrinkles. Someone in the 60’s to 70’s have bags under his or her eyes. And an older person would have sunk in cheeks.

4.  The next thing to apply when putting on make-up is BLUSH (also called rouge). This is applied lightly to the area of the cheek. Ladies will use a more pink blush and gentlemen will use a more neutral, natural color blush. When doing old age you will use a neutral color.

5.  EYE LINER & MASCARA is applies to both ladies and gentlemen. Ladies receive eye liner on both the top and bottom eyelid, while gentlemen will only have eyeliner on the bottom eyelid, not right next to the eye but just below to bring out the eye.

6.  After applying your highlights and shadows you must BLEND them together so they are less defined. If you find you have blended to much you can add more highlight or shadow. This will help your lines look less like lines and more natural on the face from a distance.

7.  Seal with POWDER & then BARRIER SPRAY. This will hold in makeup and keep it from smearing.
