Finding demographic statistics

Population demographic statistics include: populations by age and sex, housing types, marital status, private households, families, income, occupations, labour force, home language and schooling. There are also projections for different years of many census variables.

1. CANSIM (Canadian Socio-Economic Information Management System)

CANSIM is a Statistics Canada’s database of time series covering a wide variety of social and economic aspects of Canadian life. There are approximately 27 million time series.

CANSIM II (via CHASS, Computing in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, a computing facility maintained by Univ. of Toronto – updated weekly; via E-STAT – updated annually). CANSIM I was the version before CANSIM II that has not been updated since 2002.

E-Statis a Statistics Canada web site that has articles, data and statistics pertaining to Canadian census, elections, agriculture, historical censuses, and the environment. It also includes CANSIM II time series data.

Restrictions on Use (CANSIM VIA CHASS)

Licensed for use by the U of S faculty, staff and students for academic research and study.

Restrictions on Use (CANSIM VIA E-STAT)

  • Licensed for use by students in schools and colleges and universities.

3. Community Profiles

Community Profiles present community level information from Census of population. These profiles contain free information for all Canadian communities like cities, towns, villages, Indian reserves and settlements, etc. Statistics include: population; education; earnings; income families and dwellings; religion; births and deaths.
