SEED20 Coaching Session #1 Guide

Room Prep:

  • Spread folks out so the speaker has to work the room. The lead might move toward the back of the room (at least those of you in the classrooms) to encourage the speaker to project
  • Place a piece of paper on the floor to mark where the speaker should stand at the beginning of the pitch
  • Timer should sit to either the right or the left since we are going to be more obvious in holding up the yellow and red cards this year. Holding the red card up directly in front of the speaker could be annoying and distracting
  • Each person should be given 5 comment cards with the exceptions of presenters who should receive 4 comment cards

Overview for Group:

  • 10 minutes per speakerwhich will include pitch, time for audience to write comments, and verbal feedback
  • Notes are discouraged, but can use bullets for this session only
  • Speaker starts on white paper on the floor
  • Timer will hold up yellow card after 2:30 (will keep up for a few seconds) and red card will remain up after 3:00
  • Timer will indicate total time taken
  • For this session, speaker will be allowed to continue after 3 minutes so audience can provide feedback on ending of pitch
  • After pitch, audience will be given a minute to fill out comment card
  • Review comment card
  • Asking audience to provide feedback on content, flow, clarity of message, how compelling, delivery (including gestures and movement), etc.
  • In addition to “Pitch”, will be rating“Innovation” and “Sustainable Impact” (new)
  • Put star next to most important item for speaker to improve (new)
  • Audience will provide verbal feedback while speaker stands up front. Audience should give comments/observations, not asking questions of the speaker. Speaker shouldn’t respond to feedback (aside from acknowledging with something like “thank you”)
  • If a comment has already been made, please refrain from restating it. Comment cards will reflect frequency of observations
  • Encourage one team member to video tape the pitch
  • At least one team member should be taking notes on verbal feedback and total time of pitch

Lead/Timer Notes:

  • Set the tone by beginning each critique with a compliment
  • Feel free to let people start over if they lose their way. We have a bit more time at the first session, and we’d like for the speakers to leave feeling good about their performance. Try to let them end on a positive note
  • End the critique with a compliment
  • Timers, in addition to timing the speech, please help the lead limit the total time per nonprofit to 10 minutes. This will help ensure that teams have plenty of time to meet afterwards
  • At the end, announce that teams have until 8:30 to meet together and ask everyone to return name tags before they leave
