Information for candidates

Westminster School

Westminster School is a boarding and day School with origins tracing back to 1179 when the Benedictine monks of Westminster Abbey were required by Pope Alexander III to provide a small charity school. The School survived the dissolution of the monasteries due to the intervention of Henry VIII and to the Royal patronage conferred by his daughter Elizabeth I when she granted the College its Royal Charter in 1560. Separation from Westminster Abbey occurred in 1868 but an extremely close relationship is maintained and the School is privileged to worship there each week. The Queen’s Scholars and three senior members of staff are members of the Collegiate Body of St Peter at Westminster (the Abbey). The School has throughout its history provided education for boys and to this day it remains predominantly a boys' School. However girls were first admitted to the School in 1973 and today about 60 girls join the Sixth Form at 16+ for A-levels. Although proud of its deserved national and international reputation for academic excellence, Westminster pupils enjoy a very broad range of extra-curricular activities in music, drama, sport and also community engagement. The Great School presently numbers about 740 of which half are in the three years from 13+ Entry through to GCSE and half in the Sixth Form and Remove studying for A-levels.

Westminster School comprises the Great School and the Under School, the latter being a Boys' Preparatory School which was established in 1943 and from which most of its 285 pupils enter the Great School through the Challenge or Common Entrance examinations.

The School is proud of the large number of eminent former pupils who have made major contributions to this nation and to the wider world in philosophy, literature, the arts and science, politics and statesmanship, and philanthropy.

Westminster is also proud to be supported by a very engaged parent body, by former parents (Friends of Westminster) and an alumni organisation that retains close links with the School. Over the last 10 years the School has run a very successful capital campaign, three bursary gala dinners and an annual bursary fund campaign that has raised a total of over £30million. The School now seeks to increase its endowment so as to support the Governing Body’s vision to be able to award even more bursary places that will need to be funded when the newly established Westminster Enrichment Programme bears fruit.

Development at Westminster

The Westminster School Development Office covers two main activities: fundraising and alumni relations. The two main goals are to cement relationships between the School and its past pupils by providing their alumni with relevant information about the School and to enable Westminster to gain private philanthropic support in order to maintain Westminster’s position as a leading school.

Alumni Relations

The School’s alumni relations programme is well established and extensive. Lifetime membership of Westminster's alumni association, the Elizabethan Club, is guaranteed by a subscription fee that is levied against the first term's bill of each new pupil. Membership entitles all alumni (‘Old Westminsters’ or ‘OWW’) to a range of benefits and services including work experience and careers advice, invitations to interest specific events and receipt of magazine and newsletters.

Founded as a registered charity in 1937 by Lord Greene, Master of the Rolls, the Westminster School Society was created to receive and administer gifts, investments and property bequeathed by OWW. The Society is administered by a council of OWW and provides financial assistance to Westminster School mainly for the benefit of current pupils. The Society gives in excess of £100,000 to support bursary places at the School each year.

Friends of Westminster School

The Friends of Westminster School (‘Friends’) is a group of former parents, staff and others with links to the Westminster community who are able to enjoy a busy schedule of events throughout the year. The Friends currently number over 2000.

Recent Westminster Campaigns

A major capital campaign ended in 2014 with the overall target of £25million having been achieved. This helped to finance the acquisition of the Sports Centre used by both Schools, the new Purcell’s boarding house and Chapel for the Great School, a new classroom block and dining room for the Under School, and the repaving of Little Dean’s Yard. It also added to the funding available for bursaries.

The Fund for Westminster

In 2008 the School launched The Fund for Westminster - an annual appeal to all members of the Westminster community, particularly current parents and alumni, for financial support for the School. This has included a telephone and written appeal to each constituent donor body. In excess of £500,000 is raised annually this way, mainly for bursaries.

Gala Dinners

Finally, the School has held 3 gala dinners over the last 10 years at which it has raised £2.5million for bursaries.

Major legacies

The School was the very fortunate beneficiary of a share of the estate of A.A. Milne (OW). Following negotiations between the four beneficiaries and the Disney Corporation, each received c£40million. Each year the School also receives a modest income from royalties. The funds are carefully invested to generate income to provide bursaries.
