SUBJECT: First Notice of Charter Extension and Renewal Application(s) - Receipt

DATE: September 16, 2015

This Notice is to inform you that the State University of New York Board of Trustees (the “SUNY Trustees”), in its capacity as a charter authorizer, has received the following applications to extend and/or renew the charter(s) of the charter school(s) listed below. Further, the SUNY Trustees, or their designees, the SUNY Charter Schools Committee and the SUNY Charter Schools Institute, anticipate consideration of the renewal applications as soon as December 1, 2015, and the extensions as soon as October 15, 2015 .

A description of the proposed actions follows:

  • Academy of the City Charter School, The, located at 31-29 60th Street, Woodside, NY 11377, in Community School District (“CSD”) 30, currently serving approximately 405 students in grades K-5, seeks an extension of its charter from December 14, 2015 to July 31, 2016. Thereafter, it seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately420 students in grades K-5.
  • Achievement First Aspire Charter School, located at 982 Hegeman Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11208, in CSD 19, currently serving approximately 364 students in grades K-3, seeks an extension of its charter from December 14, 2015 to July 31, 2018. According to its extension application, the school would grow to serve 548 students in grades K-5.
  • Broome Street Academy Charter High School,located at 121 Avenue of the Americas, New York, NY 10013, in CSD 2, currently serving approximately 325 students in grades 9-12, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 360 students in grades 9-12.
  • East Harlem Scholars Academy Charter School,located at 1573 Madison Avenue, New York, NY 10029, in CSD 4, currently serving approximately 300 students in grades K-5, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 496 students in grades K-8.
  • Explore Charter Schools of Brooklyn, an education corporation operating more than one school, seeks to renew its charter and its authority to operate the following charter schools:
  • Explore Charter School,located at 655 Parkside Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11226, in CSD 17, currently serving approximately 540 students in grades K-8, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing June 13, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would continue to serve the same enrollment.
  • Explore Excel Charter School,located at 1077 Remsen Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11236, in CSD 18, currently serving approximately 490 students in grades K-7, seeks an extension of its charter from December 15, 2015 to July 31, 2016. Thereafter, it seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 552 students in grades K-8.
  • Harlem Prep Charter School,located at 240 East 123rd Street, New York, NY 10035 and 410 East 100th Street, New York, NY 10029, in CSD 4, currently serving approximately 756 students in grades K-8, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 1061 students in grades K-12.
  • Icahn Charter School 1,located at 1525 Brook Avenue and 1506 Brook Avenue, Bronx, NY 10457, in CSD 9, currently serving approximately 324 students in grades K-8, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would continue to serve the same enrollment.
  • Icahn Charter School 5,located at 1500 Pelham Parkway, in CSD 11, currently serving approximately 252 students in grades K-6, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 324 students in grades K-8.
  • Invictus Preparatory Charter School,located at 370 Fountain Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11208, in CSD 19, currently serving approximately 342 students in grades 5-8, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would continue to serve the same enrollment.
  • Uncommon New York City Charter Schools, an education corporation operating more than one school, seeks to renew its charter and its authority to operate Leadership Preparatory Bedford Stuyvesant Charter, located at 141 Macon Street, Brooklyn, NY, in CSD 13, currently serving approximately 1011 students in grades K-12, which seeks a five year renewal commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 1338 students in grades K-12.
  • New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science,located at 99 Terrance View Avenue, Bronx, NY, 10463, in CSD 10, currently serving approximately 566 students in grades 9-12, seeks an extension of its charter from December 14, 2015 to July 31, 2016. Thereafter, it seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would continue to serve the same enrollment.
  • New Visions Charter High School for Humanities,located at 99 Terrace View Avenue, Bronx, NY 10463, in CSD 10, currently serving approximately 566 students in grades 9-12, seeks an extension of its charter from December 14, 2015 to July 31, 2016. Thereafter, it seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would continue to serve the same enrollment.
  • Sisulu-Walker Charter High School of Harlem,located at 125 W 115th Street, New York, NY 10026, in CSD 3, currently serving approximately 270 students in grades K-5, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would continue to serve the same enrollment.
  • Success Academy Charter Schools – NYC, an education corporation operating more than one school, seeks to renew its authority to operate the following charter schools:
  • Success Academy Charter School – Harlem 1,located at 34 W. 118th Street, New York, NY 10026 and 215 114th Street, NY, NY, and 111 E. 33rd Street, New York, NY 10016, in CSDs 3 and 2, respectively, currently serving approximately 976 students in grades K-10, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 1996 students in grades K-12.
  • Success Academy Charter School – Bed Stuy 1, located at 70 Tompkins Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11206, in the in CSD 14, currently serving approximately 554 students in grades K-5, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 1051 students in grades K-10.
  • Success Academy Charter School – Upper West, located at 145 W 84th Street, New York, NY, and 439 W 49th Street, New York, NY, in CSD 3 and 2, respectively, currently serving approximately 565 students in grades K-5, seeks a five year renewal of its charter commencing August 1, 2016. According to the renewal application, the school would grow to serve approximately 888 students in grades K-10.
