The H.E. Kidder Freshman Scholarship

History

Dr. H.E. “Doc”Kidder retired as professor from the Division of Animal and Veterinary Sciences in 1988. He devoted 34 years to West Virginia University (WVU) as a teacher, advisor, livestock and horse judging team coach, and in many other notable roles. “Doc’ took particular delight in the success of his students. After his retirement, a scholarship fund was established within the WVU Foundation. Scholarship(s) are offered to attract exceptional freshmen students to enter into the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences in the Davis College of Agriculture, Forestry and Consumer Studies. These scholarships serve as a fitting memorial to “Doc,” who died in 1989.

Selection Criteria

Applicants must be entering freshmen and must show proof of acceptance into the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences at West Virginia University. Applicants must have a cumulative high school GPA greater than 3.0 and/or a composite ACT score of 25 or an SAT score of 1150. Academic performance with consideration for demonstration of leadership abilities and financial need is the basis for selection of the scholarship recipient. The director of the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences appoints members of the selection committee for a term of three years. The selection committee consists of five members: two are alumni of the division and three are active membersof the faculty of the division, one of whom is the divisional representative to the Davis College Scholarship committee. The selection committee reviews scholarship guidelines every three years and revises them as deemed appropriate.

Award

One award of $1,000 is made annually. If sufficient funds exist, a second award is offered. Scholarships are for one academic year and not renewable.

Application

The deadline for applications is March 15. Applications must include nominating letters from two high school teachers or guidance counselors. Application forms are available from the office of the director of the Division of Animal and Nutritional Sciences, GO38 Agricultural Sciences Building or on-line at The selection committee will name the scholarship recipients by May 15.
