A Challenging Solution

How a Feel-Good Oasis Developed Around a Living Pool

The starting point was one which garden design companies are frequently confronted with: the total renovation of an old-established garden with the goal of making the most of very limited space and enhancing it to its maximum effect. The dry first comment from Roland Lütkemeyer, whose “Gardeners of Eden” company in Gütersloh specialises in exclusive garden design, after his first viewing of the property and hearing the customer’s wishes: “Challenging, but solvable.”

From here on the team around Lütkemeyer began exploring how best to realize the wishes of the garden owners, a couple that run an industrial equipment business and want a place where they can do sports, relax and feel good after a hard day’s work in their company. Being water sports enthusiasts and keen sauna-goers it was clear that water would be the dominating element in their garden. Water in which proper swimming could be done. But how does that fit together? Proper swimming and very limited space? A simple counter current system alone would have been too “easy” a solution. Lütkemeyer’s creative department was challenged and came up with something more original: the water doesn’t end at the pool’s edge, but continues into an illuminated water wall, which doubles as a screen to the neighbouring property.

The main focus is on the Living Pool. It was chosen by the contractors who, as nature lovers did not want chemically treated water, but at the same time still wanted the feel of a traditional swimming pool. Also, it was an added bonus that the technology of the Living Pool is low-energy and thus cost effective. Keen sauna-goers that they are, the contractors also benefit from the fact that the basin of the Living Pool does not have to be drained in the winter and therefore can be used as a plunge pool even during the cold winter months.

Of course the creativity of the garden designer Lütkemeyer did not end at the water wall. A stainless steel outdoor shower with a granite floor tile and concealed drain is just one of the design highlights, as is the “robot garage” under a bench in the elevated flower bed that conceals the pool robot, which runs approximately four hours a day during the swimming season. The robot serves to keep the floor and walls of the pool spick and span. These are lined with a light grey pool liner and illuminated with striking under water lighting. A roll able sun sail by Lisori and innovative use of materials round off the compact garden design and help one forget the problems experienced during the construction phase. Subterranean cable lines crossed the swimming area of the pool and gaining planning permission was an arduous journey through the various institutions.

Finally all people involved in the project were satisfied: the contractors can confirm that the results met their expectations 100%. And Mr. Lütkemeyer sees his initial diagnosis confirmed: “Challenging, but solvable”.
