SUBJECT: SITUATION REPORT ON STORMS #10

OVERVIEW – The National Weather Service reports that the threat of heavy rain has come to an end. The weather pattern is shifting enough to keep the heavy rain threat east and south of the area through the rest of tonight and into Monday. The flash flood warning has been canceled for Kenosha, Racine and Walworth counties, and the flash flood watch for portions of Iowa, southeast Minnesota and Wisconsin expired at 12 a.m.

National Guard – The National Guard is delivering 25,000 sandbags to the city of Columbus and 17,000 to the village of Lowell.

Department of Natural Resources – The DNR is working with Dodge County emergency management to deliver trash pumps for deployment within Dodge County.

Red Cross – The Red Cross is opening a shelter at the Avoca community center in Iowa County. Red Cross Shelters remain open overnight at the La Farge high school, Ontario library, Viroqua high school, Richland Center at the middle school, Elroy at the Royal High School, Reedsburg at Pineview Elementary and in Madison at Wright Middle School.

Dane County – The county’s EOC has deactivated.

Winnebago County - Approximately 10 patients have been evacuated from an assisted living facility and are being sheltered at a local hotel.

Racine County – Media reports note sanitary sewer overflows had occurred at at least 6 locations in the City of Racine, resulting in discharges to the Root River or Lake Michigan.

Iowa County – Evacuation efforts are under way in the community of Avoca due to high water levels. Highway 133 east of Avoca has limited access.

Crawford County – Gays Mills and Soldiers Grove are reporting having as much water as they experienced in August 2007 flooding. Orderly evacuations are ongoing.

Marquette County – A number of roadways have water crossing them, and travel is advised only with caution. There is some basement flooding and homes with high water rising in the yards. The Briggsville dam has been sandbagged due to concerns of rising Lake Mason water, and DNR dam safety engineers have been notified. Flooding is a concern throughout the county, with strong concern in Briggsville area, Packwaukee and Montello. Storm damage from Saturday involved structural damage to homes, barns, and power utilities. Preliminary damage assessments are up to the $500,000 range.
