2013 Hmong Lecture Series
Green Bay, WI—January 9, 2013—You’re invited to learn about Hmong culture and more at the Neville’s Hmong Lecture Series. The Hmong Lecture Series is produced in conjunction with the Who are the Hmong? exhibit. Discover the Hmong as an ancient culture, allies, refugees, and neighbors at Who are the Hmong? through May 5, 2013.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013, 6:30pm to 8:00pm: Hmong Entrepreneurs
Join realtor and community leader, Xia Moua, in a lecture about the major differences between traditional Hmong entrepreneurs and today’s 21st Century Hmong entrepreneurs. Moua will share stories of how her heritage and experiences affected her career, challenges entrepreneurs face today, and what helps Hmong entrepreneurs thrive.
Wednesday, February 27, 2013, 6:30pm to 8:00pm: Hmong Marriage Customs
Join WBAY's Bao Vang as she discusses traditional Hmong marriage customs and her own personal stories. See a twelve minute film that Bao produced.
Friday, March 22, 2013, 6:30-8:00pm: Brewing Traditional Hmong Spirits
Po Lo is the Founder/Owner of Lo Artisan Distillery, LLC - a family-run genuine handcrafted artisan distillery that manufactures and bottles traditional rice “Hmong Spirit” that has no additives or artificial flavors and a smooth, clean and balanced taste with a sweet Jasmine fragrance. This strong flavorful spirit is used in all traditions and celebrations among the Hmong People. The Lo Artisan facility is located in Brussels in the southern part of Door County. Lo will give a presentation on how alcohol was made in traditional ways and how it is now being made in Wisconsin. He will end the program by giving samples for you to taste. Come and enjoy this flavorful presentation!
Wednesday, March 27, 2013, 6:30-8:00pm: A Doctor for Disease, a Shaman for the Soul
Learn about the Shaman. "Hmong are so spiritual. The Hmong believe that every place everywhere and every item has spirits. For the Hmong, the supernatural or spirit world cannot be seen by human eyes. Contact with the spirit world is made through a Shaman, a religious and medical leader," said Yia Thao, presenter.
Wednesday, April 24: Healthcare Practices in the Hmong Community
Join Jean Vang and Chua Xiong of the Brown County Health Department and learn about the healthcare practices and beliefs of the Hmong community and the clashes that can occur with traditional Western medicine.
Saturday, May 4, 2:00-3:00pm: Playing Traditional Qeej (pronounced roughly 'kling')
The Hmong qeej is a a free-reed multiple pipe musical instrument. Come and hear Vue Pao Yang’s unique performance and stories about the qeej. He will be dressed in tradition Hmong attire and will also show a video presentation of the qeej performed at festivals and funerals.
