Action Project

In the 1960’s, the population of the birds decreased almost to extinction. However, bluebirds were loved by many people and they decided to make nest boxes. The reasons for the decline in bluebird population are invasive species and urbanization. Many of the woodlands the birds used for their habitats were cut down to make houses, and the birds began to die with no place to live.

For our action project, we put up bird houses for the Eastern Bluebird around our school. With help from other students and teachers we were able to put up five birdhouses and clean out some older ones. We also checked on the houses over time to make sure they were not getting destroyed.

This helped our environmental issue because we made new habitats for the birds to live in if their old ones got destroyed. Daily, trees nearby are being cut down, bluebirds living in the trees are forced out of their habitats. Putting up these houses is good because it gives them places to nest in after they were forced out of their homes. Our school was well equipped for the Eastern Bluebird habitat because it has open fields, woodlands, and a small creek, which are things that are crucial for the bird to have.

Over the time that the houses were up, bluebirds were being seen around the school grounds. This means that the bluebirds found the nests and began to make it their habitat. This was successful because our goal was to attract the birds to the nest boxes and give them a habitat. Although the project was successful for the birds, there were some issues with parts of the bird houses falling off of the poles or pieces being lost. We were able to find the pieces and put the houses back up.
