Background on Lesson

·  Context: What kind of teaching situation/school setting is the lesson based on?

Young adult learners who are embarking on careers or trying to determine what job or career most appeals to them.

·  Learner Needs: What do the learners need/want to learn?

Students are interested in getting better jobs, many in their home countries.

·  Objectives/Aims: What will your students know or be able to do as a result of this lesson?

1) Students will be able to apply a scanning technique to quickly read through job advertisements.

2) Students will use the likes and dislikes they identified last week to scan job advertisements that match their interests.

·  Assumptions: What are you assuming in terms of student background knowledge?

Students identified as beginner English students, but they all function at an intermediate level or above. I am assuming that most of them have done some job hunting and reading of job ads.

·  Language Analysis: What new grammar and vocabulary will this lesson target?

Reading Skill: Scanning

Vocabulary: Vocab and acronyms specific to job ads and searches

·  Anticipated Problems and Solutions: What could go wrong? What backup plans do you have?

I am pairing students so that those that I have identified as having weaker skills are paired with students who can provide some support. I have an extra time speaking activity at the end and I can cut either activity 3 or 4 if time is running short.

·  Materials: What materials will you use? How will you adapt them?

I will have a variety of real and teacher prepared job advertisements, handouts, game cards and instructions. See attached.

·  Timing/Sequencing: How much time will you need?

55-60 minutes. I anticipate some interruptions from late students and I would like to end by 1:57/1:58 so that Ozlem has enough time to transition and all that transition time does not have to come out of her hour.

·  Assessment: How will you measure what your students can do?

Students will circle job ads that interest them based on the likes and dislikes they identified last week and circle the key words that they find in the ads. If there is enough time, students will discuss the jobs they highlighted and why.

·  Reflection: What worked well in this lesson? What should I improve upon next time?

Overall, I felt this lesson went well. It flowed well and built up from activity to activity. For the most part students were engaged and seemed to enjoy the variety of ways we worked on the scanning skill. I felt like I was able to continually provide connections back to that day’s objective as well as to other lessons. The pre-designation of groups did not work out as well as I had hoped, partially due to the fact that so many students arrive late. As a result, some groups were weaker and had more trouble with the activities while others finished early and were slightly bored. I made a note to think of activities and other things to do when this happens so that these faster groups do not distract those that are still working. I should have had a bit more time for assessment. Mostly, the areas I felt I needed to improve on were related to classroom management.
