Offset Productions Targets ISO Accreditation with KBA DensiTronic

Operation aims to expand packaging reach with KBA system spend.

Aylesford independent packaging, print and greetings card specialist Offset Productions has chosen KBA’s DensiTronic to underpin its provision of high quality, reliable and consistent services and drive for ISO 12647-2 accreditation.

The family-run Kent operation, with an established core business of blue chip and household names, has installed the DensiTronic system on its six-colour Large Format RAPIDA 142 press.

Operations Director Vince Brearey explains: “We plan to grow our business in all areas. In particular we want to expand our presence in the packaging and fine art sectors. With fine art especially there is less margin for error which is why DensiTronic measuring colour density and dot gain is such an important addition.”

Print Manager Mark Jeavons explains the software was particularly vital for one greetings card customer: “We have a client for who we produce work for on a B2 press and I have to send them a report after every job detailing colour density and dotgain measurements. We want to be able to run some of those jobs on the KBAs so we need to have that level of reportability. In the long run this should help us win more work from that customer plus we will be able to offer the same service to others.”

DensiTronic will also help the operation towards attaining ISO 12647-2. Brearey says: “Customers are asking more and more for quality for assurances such as the ISO standard. We installed the Rapida 142 four years ago and when we investigated ways further investment could help us achieve our goals DensiTronic was the ideal solution. It will be a vital tool in helping us achieve that accreditation.”

Jeavons adds: “ISO 12647-2 will become an increasingly important element of our service offering and give customers greater confidence in the colour consistency of our print.”

The opportunity to add performance-enhancing solutions retrospectively ensures Offset Productions will continue to offer a competitive and business winning service, adds Mr Jeavons: “The packaging market has changed very quickly over the past five years with expectations much higher and we are keen to ensure we are doing everything we can to be ahead of the pace.”

And it’s not just quality improvements Vince Brearey expects to see following the new investment: “It will also help reduce ink and paper waste by producing deliverable sheets faster,” he explains. “This will keep us price-competitive and save us money.”

Achieving production printing quality quicker on jobs is increasingly important as runs get shorter and makereadies faster and this is where DensiTronic provides an added benefit: “We will be able to get more jobs on and off the press per shift and that ultimately will help us be more productive,” states Brearey.

Simple to install and operate DensiTronic delivers precise fully automatic measurementquality control and documentation. The high-speed densitometer is mounted directly onto the ErgoTronic console of the RAPIDA presses. It features a detachable measuring head for hand-held measurementsand a guide rail with integrated vacuum strip for reliable fixing of the sheet. There is also the ability to add new or customer-specific colour bars to the standard catalogue.

Mark Nixon, KBA UK executive sales director adds the software has a number of profit enhancing and time-saving benefits that all RAPIDA owners could enjoy: “DensiTroniccuts waste sheets by 100 or so as it learns to surge the ink keys on each unit on start up and therefore reduces the over/under inking familiar with balancing jobs. It is specifically useful when dealing with ultra low inking areas as it cuts back the lowest inking requirement to meet densities with the others. Combined these savings also have the added attraction of creating a more sustainable production.”
