The following are expectations (benchmarks) for beginning 2nd grade. Your child is working to improve in: / NOT MET / MET

READING

1. Reads at level 14-16 (current level )
  1. Demonstrates the ability to blend sounds in words

  1. Uses a variety of strategies to read (besides sounding out)

  1. Reads with fluency and expression

  1. Makes simple story predictions

  1. Retells a story: characters, setting, events in a sequence

WRITING

  1. Writes multiple sentences on a topic

  1. Begins using capitalization and punctuation skills

  1. Spells the first 30 most frequently written words

MATHEMATICS

  1. Demonstrates 1:1 correspondence to 30

  1. Reads numbers to 100

  1. Writes numbers to 100

  1. Counts by 2’s to 50, by 5’s and 10’s to 100

  1. Tells what’s missing when shown only a portion of an amount (up to 6 objects without counting them)

PARENT/FAMILY HELP:

1. Read to your child/listen to your child each evening (minimum 15-20 min.)

  1. Talk about the books before you read them and encourage your child to predict what might happen in the story
  2. Occasionally ask questions about the story
  3. Encourage your child to practice re-reading familiar stories
  4. Play games using letter names and sounds, (i.e. “I spy with my eye”, Boggle)
  5. Help your child make words with letters (magnetic, tiles, etc.)
  6. Write with your child
  7. Encourage writing (i.e. lists, messages, letters, greeting cards, thank-yous)
  8. Obtain a Mult. Co. Library Card for your child and visit regularly
  9. Check out books on tape available from public library
  10. Reduce TV/video game time
  11. Increase opportunities for meaningful reading, writing, and application of math concepts
  12. Get your child to school everyday on time
  13. Help your child with weekly homework

CLASSROOM HELP:

  1. Daily guided reading groups with teacher
  2. Daily writing with teacher
  3. Small group work with teacher
  4. On-going assessments of reading performance
  5. Assemble book collections by level for independent reading practice
  6. Practice with high frequency words (i.e. games, writing, magnetic letters)
  7. Volunteer program
