GRADE 2: STUDENT INDIVIDUAL INSTRUCTIONAL PLAN

The following are expectations (benchmarks) for beginning 2nd grade. Your child is working to improve in: / NOT MET / METREADING
1. Reads at level 14-16 (current level )- Demonstrates the ability to blend sounds in words
 
- Uses a variety of strategies to read (besides sounding out)
 
- Reads with fluency and expression
 
- Makes simple story predictions
 
- Retells a story: characters, setting, events in a sequence
 
NOT MET / MET
WRITING
- Writes multiple sentences on a topic
 
- Begins using capitalization and punctuation skills
 
- Spells the first 30 most frequently written words
 
NOT MET / MET
MATHEMATICS
- Demonstrates 1:1 correspondence to 30
 
- Reads numbers to 100
 
- Writes numbers to 100
 
- Counts by 2’s to 50, by 5’s and 10’s to 100
 
- Tells what’s missing when shown only a portion of an amount (up to 6 objects without counting them)
 
PARENT/FAMILY HELP:
1. Read to your child/listen to your child each evening (minimum 15-20 min.)
- Talk about the books before you read them and encourage your child to predict what might happen in the story
 - Occasionally ask questions about the story
 - Encourage your child to practice re-reading familiar stories
 - Play games using letter names and sounds, (i.e. “I spy with my eye”, Boggle)
 - Help your child make words with letters (magnetic, tiles, etc.)
 - Write with your child
 - Encourage writing (i.e. lists, messages, letters, greeting cards, thank-yous)
 - Obtain a Mult. Co. Library Card for your child and visit regularly
 - Check out books on tape available from public library
 - Reduce TV/video game time
 - Increase opportunities for meaningful reading, writing, and application of math concepts
 - Get your child to school everyday on time
 - Help your child with weekly homework
 
CLASSROOM HELP:
- Daily guided reading groups with teacher
 - Daily writing with teacher
 - Small group work with teacher
 - On-going assessments of reading performance
 - Assemble book collections by level for independent reading practice
 - Practice with high frequency words (i.e. games, writing, magnetic letters)
 - Volunteer program
 
Listen to children read/Read aloud to children
Model reading strategies
Work on high frequency words
Provide writing support
